SpidermanScore: 7.5 / 10
When the decision maker at Armchair Empire (ouija board and a six-pack of Mike's Hard Lemonade) informed me that I was going to be reviewing Spiderman, my first inclination was to try to remember the entire theme song to the Spiderman cartoon. After twenty-seven consecutive hours of singing a song with the ending "… watch out! Here comes the Spiderman!" my office mates banded together and revoked my music privileges and no longer look at me with any respect. My second and probably more productive decision was to actually play the game. For those unfamiliar, the game itself is a port from the original Playstation then Dreamcast then N64 game.
As the webbed-one, you get the opportunity to do everything that your friendly neighborhood Spiderman can. Walk on walls/ceilings, web-sling amongst the buildings of New York City, and, most important, deliver a massive beating to all evil-doers while providing the great (ok, really sad) bon-mots that you expect from the great Stan Lee. Your web-shooters are the current up-scaled version, which can make shields, clubs, domes, and impact webbing all the while providing the best use as a prison for some unsuspecting sucker. Besides the usual tools, Spidey can use his fists and feet – not only with the typical punches and kicks but also with some nice aerial variations that can devastate your opponents even more. The |

wall-crawler can also improvise and pick up anything portable (desks, fax machines, and of course small cars). It provides some nice fighting variations that you are definitely going to need to employ in order to defeat some of the bosses. The game progresses through 5 distinct areas (New York skyline, a bank, the Daily Bugle, the New York sewers, and a final area that I'm not going to give away). All in all, there are 30 levels to explore or more aptly swing through and they are well designed. |

The extras in the game are different – you can collect Spiderman comics that can be viewed in the extras menu. In addition you can collect different costumes for Spidey – ranging from the Symbiote costume to the Scarlet Spider costume to the Ben Reiley Spiderman costume. Each of these carries special skills, which range from increased strength to unlimited webbing (although some of them have handicaps so you can prove how good you really are). The game is good, but suffers from excessive cloning. This game looks old and one can easily tell that it wasn't designed for the PC as the textures are nowhere what they should be like with the current level of 3D acceleration. You get some nice backgrounds but you really notice the poor acceleration on the characters that look downright cubic. (Black Cat's bodice looks like something out of Picasso's sketch book) For all that is wrong with the visuals, the sound is the complete opposite. The music is good and the voice acting is amazing; they actually used all of the voice actors from the animated TV series. The effect is not missed as you get an aurally stunning game. My final peeve is the control. I'm sure that the game would be best played with a console-style controller, but most PC owners (including myself) only own the flight-stick style joysticks (or the current Microsoft SideWinder-esque ones) and which make things nearly impossible to play. Although it is theoretically possible to play the game on the keyboard, I wouldn't recommend it. All in all, you end up with an average game that is fun to play. - Tazman
