The Spiderwick Chronicles

The Spiderwick Chronicles is the last release from Stormfront Studios, a development house with a storied history going back to the late ‘80s, but more recently known for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Blood Wake, Demon Stone, and Eragon.  It’s kinda too bad that Stormfront came to an end with Spiderwick Chronicles, at least from a hardcore gamer perspective because the 9 – 13 age bracket seems to like the game okay.

 

Sticking closely to the movie source material, Spiderwick Chronicles follows the exploits of Jared, Simon and Mallory, each with their own unique attributes, which are controlled in turn throughout the game.  There’s the typical gamut of action and puzzle sequences, sprinkled with platforming throughout, which should be a

breeze for anyone over the age of sixteen since most of the action centers on hammering on the attack button.  Some of the exploration elements can be a little confusing for younger gamers since the clues at what to do next aren’t as obvious as they probably should be.

 

One extra wrinkle for those younger games is

collecting fairies, which work as power-ups to augment such things as health and strength to make the game easier.

 

That’s about as far as it goes for Spiderwick Chronicles’ depth.

 

The game is put together very well – there are no graphic or audio problems, the film segments mesh with the way the story unfolds, and there were no crashes.  As far as movie tie-ins go, this a good example of how to do it right.  But you have to have the knowledge that this game isn’t aimed at experienced or older players.
