Acer Predator X34 Design & Specifications
At this price tier, the monitor needs to perform flawlessly and look simply stunning. Luckily, Acer knows what they’re doing. If you’re going to shoot for premier gaming performance, you might as well make a statement with the physical design too, right?
The X34’s top, left, and right bezels are matte black, and measure a mere centimeter in thickness, while the bottom bezel is dark gray and measures an inch. The Predator logo is tastefully engraved in the center of the bottom bezel and serves as a very cool “statement” design. The bezels are all incredibly thin and subtle, but it honestly doesn’t even matter – with a curved 34-inch screen, bezels are the last thing on your mind.
While the front-facing bezels are plastic (as expected), there is also a metal frame around the entire monitor that adds a sense of style and safety to the unit. The back of the display, however, is your standard glossy black plastic – probably meant to cut down on the overall weight of the X34.
I absolutely love the X34’s stand. Its design is best described as aggressive – it just shouts “I’m a badass gamer” to anyone who walks into the room. It’s made of heavy duty metal and is rather minimalist in nature. Each leg is a long metal spike, and there’s an extra metal square support component in the back that adds even more stability to this behemoth monitor. The stand doesn’t even pretend to be “slim” and takes up quite a bit more space than typical monitor stands do. But again – if you’re splurging for a massive 34-inch, curved monitor, did you really expect it to be “slim?”
While the stand size may bother some gamers, I didn’t have any issues with it at all – this monitor simply isn’t well-suited for smaller desks. As an extra-cool addition, Acer carved the top of the stand into a sturdy metal handle so you can easily move the monitor around when necessary. The stand does allow for total control over monitor height, swivel, and tilt, as you might expect from a premium monitor like this one.
Acer did choose to go with physical buttons for the X34, all located on the bottom right-hand side of the bezel. The physical buttons compliment the bold design of the monitor overall and look much better than touch buttons or “hidden” buttons would.
We’ve already mentioned it a few times, but the X34 aptly features a massive, curved 34-inch IPS panel display, which powers an UltraWide QHD 3440×1440 pixel resolution and boasts a 21:9 aspect ratio. The monitor operates at a maximum measured brightness of 300 nits, which is more than enough light output for any type of media out there. The curved nature of the monitor really is a game-changer. If you had a flat 34-inch monitor, you’d quite literally need to turn your head to the left and right to really “see” those portions of the screen. With a curved panel, you don’t – everything is right in your field of vision, and the curve adds a VR-esque element to your games and movies.
Input options are the only slightly disappointing feature of this monster gaming monitor. It offers just one HDMI input and one DisplayPort input – your needs are covered, but there are plenty of cheaper, worse monitors out there that still do offer multiple HDMI inputs so you can have more than just one PC or console hooked up at the same time. Other than the video input options, the X34 also comes with a standard headphone jack, one USB 3.0 host port, and 4 USB 3.0 ports. This USB hub is quite welcome and really helps out with cable management for your gaming rig.
Finally, we have the physical dimensions of the entire unit. The X34 (including the stand) measures 32.5 x 12.2 x 23.1 inches and weighs a hefty 21.9 pounds. It’s a very large monitor, but you simply can’t expect anything smaller when you’re opting for such a powerhouse display in the first place.
- 34" Curved Display (21:9 Aspect Ratio)
- 3440 x 1440 (native and maximum) Resolution.233mm Pixel Pitch
- 60Hz (Overclocking up to 100Hz)
Acer Predator X34 Features
We’ll go over all of the technical specs of this awesome monitor in detail below, but if you want the TL;DR – absolutely nothing disappoints here.
Like we mentioned above, the X34 features an IPS panel and operates with a dynamic contrast ratio of 100,000,000:1. When you go big like this, you really don’t want anything less. TN panels have their time and place, but the work and love that went into the X34 would definitely be wasted on a TN panel.
If you’re a refresh rate/response time nut like I am, have no fear – the X34 does not let you down in either category. The X34 does come with NVIDIA’s G-SYNC technology, which essentially synchronizes the monitor’s refresh rate to the FPS rate of your GPU in order to eliminate screen tearing. The X34 comes with a standard 60Hz refresh rate, but you can overclock the display to an awesome 100Hz refresh rate quite easily. This obviously is a tad shy of the 144Hz refresh rate you’ll see on other monitors, but it’s more than good enough for any gamer out there – as long as your rig can handle it.
The X34 has a 4ms response time, which may leave some tech-centric gamers a little disappointed, as you can get some TN panel monitors with 1ms response times. If you’re getting hung up on the 4ms number, don’t worry about it – it’s widely accepted that a 7ms response time is the “limit” for ghosting-free and blur-free gaming, and the X34 comes in well under that marker.
Armchair Empire panel type note: The X34 does feature IPS panel technology. An IPS panel is one of three common panel types you’ll run into – IPS, TN, and VA. Of the three, IPS panels are known to have the absolute best color reproduction, contrast, and viewing angles. Some IPS panels suffer from worse refresh rates or slower response times, but the X34 is not one of them. If you’re coming from a “fast” TN panel and are worried about lag, you can rest easy!
Acer Predator X34 Performance
The X34 is simply drop-dead gorgeous. Acer rates this model to display 100% of the sRGB color gamut, which is a dizzying 1.07 billion colors. In other words, you won’t find deeper blacks, more pure whites, or crisper colors in general anywhere else. This is immediately apparent when you boot up any open-world game – you’ll find yourself distracted and standing still so you can simply take in the game’s environment in a way you never knew was possible on lesser monitors.
The X34 also powers a surprisingly uniform picture. Some IPS panels suffer from bad light bleed around the corners, where you can “see” the display’s backlight shining through darker colors. This is not the case at all with the X34 – I honestly didn’t notice any light bleed at all. I had always thought light bleed was a given with IPS panels, but now I’m not so sure. Maybe I just got lucky and tested out a near-perfect model, but I haven’t seen any other complaints of light bleed out there either.
The viewing angles are just as superb as those of any high-quality IPS panel, with 0 color distortion when viewing the display off-center. I also noticed absolutely no screen tearing (thanks to the 100Hz overclocked refresh rate along with G-SYNC) and no ghosting or motion blur during action-packed games and movie scenes. The X34 really does do it best.
Acer Predator X34 Extras
The X34v does come with two 7W DTS Sound speakers built in, which is always a nice gesture from the manufacturer. But let’s face it – monitor speakers are never going to deliver the sound quality and depth of external speaker systems, and you’re doing yourself a disservice if you rely on these 7W speakers for your media consumption.
The X34 is ENERGY STAR and RoHS compliant and features Acer’s EcoDisplay technology that utilizes mercury-free backlighting and reduces power consumption by up to 68%.
Acer Predator X34 Pros
- UltraWide QHD display + curved panel cannot be beaten when it comes to total game immersion
- Best picture I’ve ever seen, on any gaming monitor – you’ll spend hours just staring in awe at this beastly display
- Physically stylish and incredibly durable
- NVIDIA G-SYNC technology for 0 screen tearing
- 100Hz overclocked refresh rate
Acer Predator X34 Cons
- Price – not for the average Joe gamer
- Limited input options – would be nice to see more than one HDMI / DisplayPort inputs
- Speakers aren’t great, but monitor speakers never are
