Star Wars: Super Bombad RacingScore: 8.0 / 10 I must admit that when I saw the title, I was weary of playing a game with the word "bad" as a part of the title – but I remember back to the early 90's when I played "Bad Dudes" and so I figured it would be ok. (How's that for an opening, eh?) Well, Bombad Racing, as one would expect, revolves around characters from Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace. You get a choice of nine racers: Yoda, Sebulba, Anakin, Amidala, Obi-Wan, Jar Jar, Darth Maul, Boss Nass, and a mystery racer that you get to uncover later. Each of these characters pilots a specific racer (somewhat based on the movie - don't ask what Yoda, Jar Jar, and Boss Nass fly I can't explain or fathom it either). It's Big Head racing at its finest, not like there is a real big market for it right now but it could be huge!
Anyways, the idea is pretty straightforward. You race against 7 other characters in some interactive courses taken from different areas of the movie, ranging from Naboo's cities and swamps to the open deserts of Tatooine. These courses are interactive to the point where its inhabitants may interfere in the race or merely break apart when run over by a racing speeder. (Running over Battle droids was never this fun before.) The game play is designed for kids, and with that in mind, the controls are streamlined so you don't have to go button hunting during the action (which I appreciate once in a while). Besides the race, all you have to worry about is your shield energy. As you slam into walls and get bumped around, that energy dissipates and when you lose all of your energy your racer stops momentarily to regenerate that shield (needless to say it's a good tactic to slam around your opponents).

Each character has their own racing statistics – the lighter ships might be able to accelerate faster and take corners tightly but they have lower top speeds and can be hammered when bumped. With this in mind, choosing a racer becomes a surprisingly important decision for each race or circuit as some races cannot be won with certain characters (think of it as a really extreme handicapping system). However, to make up for this, LucasArts has included "weapons" – referred to as gadgets, which are in effect ways |

to screw your opponents by either momentarily disabling them or using them to sling you in front of them. Gadgets range from extreme boosts of speed (that you can selectively use) to Gungan energy balls (drains energy from systems) to tractor beams and other annoyances to heap on your opponents. It has a real "Super Mario Kart" feel to it – especially when you play the multiplayer arenas.
Visuals? Excellent. All of the textures are smooth and look spectacular especially with all of the vibrant colors that have been used – even the desert scenes look great with the stratification of the rocks visible in the trenches. It's the little things like that which make it great. Sound? Annoying. The music is different for each level (and is pretty darn good) but you'll be wanting to kill yourself after a while of hearing the other racers especially if kids are playing (I had the two neighbor kids try it and while they played they kept hitting the taunt button every moment to the point where I almost screamed – all I hear is that damn bell and Jake Lloyd!!). Parents may want to hit the mute button on the TV – it will save many fatalities and pointless room cleanings. Bottom line: good looking game with a few minor detractions, which little kids will love but serious gamers will not. It's definitely the kind of game that you should rent before you buy.
