- Brings innovation to the shooter

- The presentation is excellent

- The graphics and sound are excellent

- The single player campaign goes by too quickly

- Co-op modes of the single-player modes would have been nice

- Although it innovates, I can’t help but feel I’ve been here before

The Club

Score: 7.0 / 10

At first glance, you are going to (as I did) probably groan “Hey, it’s another shooter!”  Of course, you’d be right – but don’t give up on The Club that quickly because there is a lot here that’s new and you might actually like.

The single player campaign consists of over four dozen separate missions which sounds like a lot, except many of them go by quickly. The online play will have you shooting down other people instead of the usual clunky A.I. opponents (which aren’t actually that bad, mind you) but I was disappointed not to see co-op recreations of the game’s single player campaign levels.

When it comes right down to it, The Club is all about scoring. You get more points for taking down an enemy by pegging him in the head, but points really start to

rack up when you take advantage of the combo meter. This is where The Club is distinctively different. You start the combo meter by killing an enemy, and then keep it building by killing the next enemy before the combo meter runs out. Keep the string of kills alive and your points start skyrocketing. At the end of the day (or, more appropriately, the level) the higher your score, the higher your ranking.

The Club is great for those that like refining their strategies over and over again trying to get the best score. If that’s not you, you might want to just check this one out as a rental.

This game is good – in fact, excellent in certain areas. I give it points for trying something new in what has always been a crowded genre. However, I still feel like I walked away with a bit of “been there, done that” kind of a feeling.

The Club is one of those games that you are really going to fall in love with, or discard fairly quickly. It makes it difficult to score because of that, so you’ll have to draw your own conclusions after trying it out. Give it a chance however, because any game that innovates deserves respect and this one definitely falls in that category. I’m off to try and get that head shot now.
