Oh my, now
here's an audio experience I could have done without. The soundtrack to
Vampire Princess Miyu (VPM) has got to be one of the annoyingly chipper,
yet dreary compilations of music that I have ever, ever heard. The vast
majority of the CD is littered with the most insipid musical sensibility
that I have ever heard. It's oddly happy, but not quite, but what really
hurts the tracks is you can pretty much see exactly where each one of
them is going in terms of chord progressions and melodies. Then on top
of this there are all the of these chimy, bell-like instruments that
instantly infuse this acrid taste across many of the tracks, not to
mention that a lot of the instruments sound like high-end midi, not the
actual real life music. This just makes the tracks sound more like
something from a Sega CD RPG. Speaking of RPGs, there are also a number
of tracks that sound just like something you would expect from a mid-90s
RPG boss fight. While tolerable every once in a while (usually when
you're actually fighting the boss in the game), there are about a half
dozen tunes like this on the CD, making for some beating of the dead
horse. To it's credit the soundtrack has a couple of borderline
palatable tracks to it, those being particularly gloomy. While they
aren't all that bad one would be better served listening to some darker
Radiohead or Catherine Wheel when they're in the mood to mope around,
not these songs. Helping to ultimately kill this soundtrack is that
there are 34 tracks on the CD and most of them are around two minutes,
so right off the bat it's difficult to set a consistent mood throughout
the disc.
If you're looking for new anime soundtracks you should just move right
past VPM's, you can do much better.
