Alien Queen (Movie Maniacs)

by McFarlane Toys

The highlight and finale of the bestselling Movie Maniacs 6 line has got to be this amazing figure from McFarlane Toys, the b**** herself, the gigantic Alien Queen. Absolutely dwarfing the other Alien toys in this line, and also every other figure ever, the Queen is one of the coolest toys this year, a must-buy for everyone.

The Alien Queen is a massive figure; she stands over 10" tall (larger if you make her stand up on her legs instead of her normal leering pose) and is 20" long, from the end of her tail to her head. The box she comes in is nice and big too, but they STILL needed to squash her in to make her fit, and getting her out of that box is a lengthy experience: she has about 30 twisty ties to undo, many in hard to reach places, so removing her will need to be done by an adult, and a patient one at that. Out of the box, she's huge. I know I've already mentioned it, but I need to point it out: SHE'S HUGE. Her head alone is bigger than your average figure. She'll terrify even your scariest demon toys.

Saying that her sculpt is great is an understatement – this is one of the best sculpted toys I have ever seen, bar none. McToys has gone the whole distance to make this toy an exact replica of the terrifying alien seen onscreen in the classic Aliens, holding nothing back. From the long sharp tail used to split Bishop in half, to her huge, hulking head, with the veiny crests and spines leading down to the scary mouth, everything is perfect. Her body features all the little details you couldn't even see in the movie. It's matched by the great paint apps, perfect all over, defining the sharp metallic "skin" of the Queen, she's utterly beautiful. A work of art, this toy is perfect for display, play, whatever, just buy!! Now!!!

The articulation of this figure lets it down a little, but with good reason. She has 10 points of articulation; ball-jointed arms (all four of them), wrists, legs, waist, several neck/head joints, and a bendy tail. This isn't too bad, she's moveable and playable, but it isn't as perfect as the sculpting. Her arms would be great with elbow joints, although I imagine they would have taken a little away from the sculpt, and with more leg joints, she wouldn't be able to stand so well. Her tail is particularly well-done here; it can be moved into any position imaginable, bettered only by the cool neck/head articulation, which allows her head to move forward and back in all kinds of poses thanks to a neck made out of awesome soft-plastic rubber (the same as that from the Deluxe Headless Horseman) but it wont break. You can move and face her in any direction with this, and there is even a ball-joint in the front of her head to move that part of her head around. The only thing really missing from this consistently impressive toy is the ability to open her mouth – this is sorely missed, as it would have added much play value. Also missing is a second-jaw-pop-out action - instead of this, however, the Queen comes with a base, with an even more disturbing play action.

There are two parts to the base; the first is a section of a grated-metal floor from somewhere within the compound from Aliens, presumably. It is important to the figure as it allows her to stand. Because of the huge size and weight of the figure, it would have been impossible to get her to stand without a base and pegs in her feet.

The second part of the base is a section of floor and then wall, with a poor colonist victim stuck in some nasty green ooze stuff, and impregnated with a cute little chest-burster that actually pops out of her splitting stomach, and then moves, simply with the push of a button. This inventively gross play action works via a lever, which sticks out of the back of the wall: pulling it pulls the little alien back into her body, then pushing it and moving it pops him out of her chest, very nasty. I love it!

The amount of detail in this tiny base is impressive, with the base itself sculpted to look exactly like the grated floor and breaking down wall, with little wires and pipes coming out realistically, all broken, behind the poor victim figure. The victim also has a high quality sculpt and paint; she looks twisted and in pain within the slime prison (the slimy 'Secreted Resin' stuff itself is made out of soft plastic, which feels creepy to touch) and she's even articulated at the wrists and neck! The gory chest burster is sadly not removable, but it's more fun to move him splattering out of her chest anyway, he's even bloodied up as he exits the wound, beautiful!

This is one of the best toys I've bought this year, an absolute must-own toy - there are only a few small flaws that don't affect the overall impact of this BEAST of a boxed set. "Deluxe" is the right word – go and buy this toy right now!
