Batmanuel (The Tick)

Even though the TV show, The Tick, was never given much of a chance to gain an audience (What the hell were you thinking Fox!), I’d say the action figures from N2 Toys have the chance to become collectors items; more so for Batmanual as he’s considered a “secondary” character and may not get the production numbers Tick and Arthur do.

Batmanuel, that suave womanizing “hero”, stands just shy of 7” tall.  His costume has been nailed.  The coloring, the etching, the boots, the mask, the gloves – all have been nailed to near perfection.  The most important aspect of Batmanuel’s personality is his near-constant smirk and the sculpt has nailed that as well.  Batmanuel gets dinged in the articulation department though.  The most glaring is the lack of elbow articulation.  A gold cell phone is in his right hand but forget about trying to pose him as if he’s talking to someone.  He has

ball-jointed shoulders and a seam-jointed neck to allow for some poseability – just elevating Batmanuel above statue status.  He has articulation at his hips but if you want to have him stand there’s only one correct position.  Standing him is easy and he will stay standing even under vibration.  The cape is hard plastic and is easy to remove and put back on.  It’s sculpted to emulate being rippled in the wind.

Playability is pretty good but falls short of “excellent.”  Batmanuel is tough.  I don’t know what kind of plastic alloy N2 is using for its figures but it’s very scratch

resistant and won’t break unless a lot of force is applied.  If you’ve got small kinds in the house, Batmanuel is a figure you can let them play with. (Provided you actually take your action figures out of the package.)  The cape is the only accessory (aside from the Superhero License) and it can be lost but it’s big enough you’ll have an easy time finding it.  The solid elbows are a big knock in the playability department.  As mentioned above, he comes with a cell phone in his right hand but it’s rendered academic, as you can’t pretend he’s calling his press agent or lawyer.  Fortunately, he’s in perfect proportion to the other characters in the series so setting up amusing situations with Captain Liberty is always an option. (Many more if he had bendable elbows!)

The one “accessory” I wish Batmanuel came with is the Batmanuelmobile – one that could fit all four of the heros.  It would be a great bonus for display purposes.  Besides that, what’s Batmanuel without an extension of his ego?  A guy with funny ears wearing a cape.

Is Batmanuel worth the money?  Definitely.  With the cult status of Ben Edlund’s Tick comic, the underground following of the cartoon, and the legion of would-be fans mourning the loss of the live-action TV show, Batmanuel is a good figure to help you remember the good ‘ol days and make up for not buying Diefledermaus when you had the chance.
