Berserker the Troll (Viking
Age)
by McFarlane
Toys

Berserker the Troll seems much like any other
warrior figure from the Viking Spawn line. He's covered in armor and fur, he has
his own specialized weapon – a crossbow – and he's articulated to the max;
EXCEPT for the fact that he's a troll. Though his trollish-appearance and nature
is a moot point – if not for his blue

skinned-face and arms, he could just be any other
Viking or warrior figure.
He stands about 6" tall and has probably the best articulation of all of the
Viking Spawn figures; not because of the articulation itself, which is the same
excellent standard of the whole line, but because of his design, which leaves
him more agile and poseable. Unlike the other bulky |

figures, he's more flexible and can get into those
Spidey Classic-esque poses, which are good for posing his crossbow. He might
well be the Sniper Wolf of the past, lying down firing at the enemies from a
hidden spot (all head shots).
His sculpt is great, covered in all the beautiful little details that McToys is
known for. The facial sculpt is my favorite – he looks mean and angry, perfect
for your battles. (Look at the musty, uncleaned teeth!) His skintone is a deep
blue, which separates him from the greenish trolls of Lord of the Rings (which
he could easily massacre), and he's far more detailed – his armor is weird, with
an odd array of belts and fur, but they suit him. He seemed durable enough until
his arm cleanly came off so, while he can be played with, I'd leave heavy play
for your other toys.
He includes some nice accessories, including a fur pelt made from a skinned
wolf, which cleanly fits onto him and looks great. The detail and paint on it is
nothing special but it is still effective. His other accessories are his
crossbow and three arrows - the arrows fit into his wallet on his main belt, and
one arrow fits into the crossbow. It seems like perhaps the crossbow was once
meant to fire, but the projectiles (small and sharp) might have been too
dangerous. The nicely detailed but sloppily painted crossbow has a strap which
makes it appear authentic and dangerous for your Troll to hold, and he does this
well. His articulation allows him to wield the crossbow dangerously like the
sniper he is, but something doesn't look right about it. As a troll, especially
called "berserker", it would make more sense for him to have a large blade or
other hand-to-hand combat weapon to charge into battle with rather than a
crossbow. But if you can suspend your disbelief that the angry troll would
prefer to stay away from battle and snipe from the side, then this is the troll
toy for you. Otherwise, creative kids and players can just give him an axe or
sword from another toy to let him battle since he can hold most accessories
well.
Overall, a strangely nifty figure that fits into the S22 line as the oddity of
Viking Spawn, but an oddity that will grow on you. Much recommended.
