Clown IV (Spawn Reborn)

by McFarlane Toys

clown

McFarlane's 24th series of Spawn figures paved the way for repaints of some older, popular figures, re-releasing the figures as "Reborn", including some nifty new interpretations of Spawn characters like Raven Spawn, the Redeemer and Curse of the Spawn 2 and a few oddball choices. (Domina, anyone?) One of the best figures in the line is the reborn Clown IV, originally a Spawn Classics XX figure, redecorated in time for Halloween in his scariest garb!

The demented little clown stands about 5" tall in his pudgy little body, his oversized gut gaping from his stretched clothing. The creepy fatso has a nasty hump back, with big muscley arms attached to big nasty hands wielding a bloodied knife - he's quite the demonic little monster. The sculpt is excellent, as expected from McFarlane Toys - details everywhere, from the hair on his belly to the veins in his arms plus a real leather-like jacket, it's all very classy, and the new paint job is very imaginative: the Clown is all ready to trick or treat, with jack-o-lantern face paint and a nasty "BOO!" on his tummy, even the words LOVE and HATE tattooed onto his hands, straight from Night of the Hunter. It's a nice effort to mirror the jolliness of the original clown with lots of creepy Halloween touches.

Sadly for our Clown, articulation is lacking, as are accessories - the original Clown IV had quite a few bits and pieces, however this guy only has his big jolly knife, splattered with glistening blood. It's very nice but very lonely. I also had a problem getting the thing out of his hand - the end of the handle doesn't come off easily as one would expect. Seeing as though it's the only accessory, it makes Mr. Clown a little bare. His articulation doesn't allow for much poseability or play, mostly because of the sculpt; Clownie has ball-jointed shoulders, then elbow, wrist, feet and midsection movement, but he can't do much but make threatening movements with his knife.

Fortunately, the big guy is durable enough for a little bit of play, although this is a pretty sick toy to play with. (Not that that would stop kiddies nowadays!) Reborn Clown IV is a sweet display piece for Spawn fans, and he looks great with other Clown toys - buy him for Halloween and watch that he doesn't kill your other toys!
