Ed
Jovanovski (McFarlane’s SportsPicks) by
McFarlane Toys
Mcfarlane
seems to be doing great financially with the sport figurines. I’m not
into hockey, but I do not need to be a hockey fan to know that this is one
of those very few times where I actually can say that I am disappointed in
a Mcfarlane face job. This is saying a lot too, especially with all the
great work Mcfarlane has done over the years. Luckily for me, I’m not a
hockey guy and I’m very happy with Mcfarlane’s other works, but I bet
a lot of hockey fans (Vancouver collectors especially) will be very
disappointed with Ed Jovanovski’s face.
Like
I already said, I have no interest in hockey so I did a Google image
search in order to do a comparison on Mr. Jovanovski’s appearance. I
took a look at several pictures and wallpapers, but none of them resembled
Mcfarlane’s work. On the figure, Ed’s face appears a little chubby.
However, the main face sculpt inaccuracy is that his eyes seem to be off.
On the
figure, Ed’s eyes are narrow and intense, whereas in the pictures, his
eyes look more relaxed and wider. He just lacks expression and he just
looks depressed, even with that smirk on his face.
The
body was done pretty well. It looks as if Mcfarlane really sculpted pads
underneath his jersey. Ed’s gloves are etched with a lot of detail and
Mcfarlane was even able to get the smallest details down top notch. The
writing across the glove is very small, but it is still readable. Ed’s
helmet looks official, as if they just shrunk an actual hockey helmet and
put it on the figure.
Paint
application is pretty good, but not the best, especially compared to the
Spawn toys. The one thing that was noticeably sloppy was the paint on
the left arm. There is one red stripe and one blue stripe located on
Ed’s forearm. The red stripe overlaps the
blue one resulting in a color mix. However, the paint on the accessories was done very well.
Ed
comes equipped with a base and a hockey stick. The base is neat because
it looks just like an actual hockey rink. You can even see skating blade
markings on it. The stick looks very authentic.
Overall,
even though the face is disappointing, Ed Jovanovski is a fine addition
for Vancouver hockey fans.
