Ernst
Blofeld (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service)by
Sideshow Toy
Sideshow
Toy always puts in the effort getting the packaging right – it’s
almost a shame to take the figure out because it looks so good in the
package.But if you don’t
take Ernst Blofeld (played by one of the baldest men in TV history,
Telly Savalas) out of the package you’re missing out.
Like
all of Sideshow’s 12” figures, Ernst is packed with “real life”
articulation.The wrists,
the elbows, the shoulders, the knees, the neck, etc. all provide the
kind of articulation you’d expect of an actual body, which means much
poseability.The head
sculpt is astounding.With
a change of clothes he could easily be Kojak. There’s absolutely no doubting this is Telly Savalas, right
down to the mole on his left cheek and smooth pate.
More
importantly, his movie likeness has been nailed. He wears one of the more ridiculous villain outfits but it
somehow suits Blofeld, particularly when he’s equipped with his other
accessories.The attention
to detail is extremely good.For
example, the ammo clip for his handgun can be pulled out.Not only that, you can see the clip is loaded with ammo!He also comes packed with two grenades, a holster for the
handgun, ski goggles, binoculars (with case) and grenade launcher.Another aspect worthy of note is the ski goggles that magnify his
eyes like twin fishbowls.

Display
factor is very high with the disc base.I’ve always liked the display stands that Sideshow includes
with the vast majority of their 12” figures.Ernst stands on the insignia disc and can’t be knocked down in
any casual way, thanks to the pincer-like clamp that holds his middle
and slides into the stand for perfect display.Free standing Blofeld can be tricky depending on the pose but the
stand is designed so well, why even try?
When
it comes to playabilty, Ernst can hold his own even with the number of
small accessories that can be lost. All the accessories except the goggles and grenade launcher can
be fitted on his belt so the danger is lessened.(Installing
the holster and binoculars case is a bit finicky since the belt has too
much flexibility.)The real
danger, as with all clothed action figures, is that the clothes can rip
or tear under rough play.Obviously,
Ernst is aimed at an older audience so he’s not that likely to be put
through his paces.However,
if there are kids around (or you just can’t help yourself) Ernst
stands up to play pretty well (but watch for scuff marks on his head).Call me a geek, but I re-enacted large chunks of On Her
Majesty’s Secret Service with Ernst and Bond (played by George Lazenby)
and it was tons of fun.
Bond
collectors and Kojak fans, this one’s a good purchase. It matches Sideshow’s high standards, from the packaging to the
accessories.
