Fortune (Metal Gear Solid 2)
by
McFarlane Toys

In
terms of swimsuit-clad bad-ass women, Fortune is right near the top of the heap.
She stands just under 6 ˝” tall, just an inch an a half taller than her gun. The
sculpt accurately snags her video game likeness – especially her evil eye stare;
she’s downright creepy looking. Detail level is high (just look at those boots!)

articulation points are few (only 10) and not
useful to put her in different poses. Unlike nearly all the other MGS2
figures, Fortune is practically a statue. Her feet have one correct position to
be in to allow her to stand. The fact she only has seam joints is the main
reason. When you do get her standing, she’s

fairly
solid. Her huge gun is a little difficult to install in her hands, mainly
because her hands are so small. (I managed to pop out her left hand in my
attempt.) She does look good but since there aren’t a variety of poses possible
it tends to get a little samey.
Other highlights: the errant lock of hair over her right eye, the sculpted coat,
the roomy handgun holster, and the overall good paint job.
Playability… no, no, no! Fortune is just too easy to break or otherwise mangle.
The coat draped over her shoulders is not supposed to come off. It’s glued on
there but I didn’t realize that until I’d taken it off. Her lock of hair is
really easy to pull off – then lose. Just taking her massive gun out of the
package I managed to snap off the side-mounted targeting sight. Then I proceeded
to pull the gun strap off (accidentally, of course). To further compound things
I lost her handgun before I could stow it in her holster. (And became paranoid
about losing everything else that had fallen off of her.) She did not look at
all healthy even before I began the play test. Her playability also takes a
small hit from not being able to achieve many poses. Her saving grace is that
she’s in proportion to the other figures in the series, so making those
action-packed dioramas is possible – even if she’s not so action-packed.
Basically, she’s close to Jaws (Movie Maniacs 4) – lots of bits to snap off and
not a figure to be played with. Good for display though.
