You’ve
seen every episode of the Simpsons, own Seasons 1 – 3 on DVD, have a
few pairs of Homer boxer shorts in your dresser, and generally feel that
the Simpsons have had more of an impact on your life than incandescent
lighting.This would
classify you as a hardcore Simpsons fan – and Sideshow Toy has a great
set of collectibles for you.
I
know these are not action figures. In fact these are the furthest things from action figures. No articulation, no plastic parts to snap, and no accessories to
lose, the usual the hallmarks of action figures.Homer and Bart are made from a strange, outer-space material
called “polystone”, have no moving parts, and no accessories. However, that doesn’t subtract from their obvious appeal and
game tie-in.
Limited
edition (5,000 pieces each) Homer and Bart each stand about 6” tall
and are sculpted with a sure hand (that of Oluf W. Hartvigson) and in
interesting poses.Really,
these are serious works of art – and you will repeat this to visitors
that comment on them.On a
mantle, on a shelf, or on your TV, they immediately catch the eye.And no longer will your
friends look
down on you for collecting
those “juvenile” action figures (which you carefully stored before
they arrived).If you’re
still having problems convincing people that Bart and Homer are art,
direct their attention to the lettering on the bases.Nothing says, “serious art” like Times New Roman script
across a Greco-Roman marbled base.
Also
very serious is the paint job.The
clothing has received a matte finish while the skin tone is shiny. This makes for great display – particularly if you have
directed display lighting.There
is no oversplash or other paint

flaws. And unlike Homer’s action figure brethren with painted-on hair
(from Playmates),
his high-art counterpart sports “wired” hair making him the most
accurate representation of Homer ever.
Playability
is nil.These are display
pieces and nothing else.I don’t want to test how durable polystone is – no matter its
alien origins – so don’t ask me about how it fared in the
playability test because I didn’t run them through.Homer and Bart are good for display on a variety of flat
surfaces, including your TV. (I put mine on the fireplace mantle –
when my wife’s not looking.She
hasn’t come to grips with the “these are art” idea.)
With
a price tag of $35US each (plus S&H) some fans may balk.Sideshow currently has 7 Simpson busts available (with more on
the way) so grabbing them all may not be an option. But remember, these are art! How much would you pay for a
painting or a sculpture?If
you look at it that way, these are a bargain!
