Homer Simpson (The Simpsons) by Playmates

North America has been crying out for some quality Simpson action figures. Playmates answered the call and delivered a sterling line-up. Each figure comes with a small chip in the feet that when plugged into various playsets plays a random line of dialogue from that character (you have to push a button to activate the line of course). Homer’s the head of the Simpson family and he was the first I opened.

Removing him from the package is a snap – just tear the bubble off the card and he tumbles out. There are no black twist ties anywhere! Once free Homer stands about 4" tall and is in good proportion to the other figures in the line. The paint job is very good. There isn’t much to screw up – he’s wearing his every-day white collared shirt and blue pants. The detail of

the head is good – a stupid smile plastered to his face and the two combed-over hairs. There’s not a moment of doubt that this is Homer Simpson. But for those that need more evidence, look at the accessories. He comes with a dented can of Duff beer, a donut with a bite out of it, a bag of chips and a TV remote. All are consistent with how they should look in the show and all fit easily into Homer’s hand. Of course, half the fun is missed if you don’t have an Intelli-tronic playset (Simpson living room, Quickie Mart, Homer’s workstation, so far) which allows lines like, "Marge, I ate the fancy soaps you got for the bathroom," and the classic, "D’oh!" to be heard.

Apart from the small accessories, Homer stands up well to rough play. Besides the half-hour Homer spent with my son, he survived a fall from the top of a bookcase, being stepped on by me in the middle of the night and he still pulled through no problem. He’s a solid figure and has the perfect number of articulation points, located at the neck, shoulders and waist. But he’s also very easy to display since he’s steady on his feet.
