Ken Masters (Street Fighter)

by SOTA Toys

ken masters

SHORYUKEN! Ryu may specialize in his hadouken technique, but Ken Masters is no slouch. He can focus his ki at the last second and pull off a flaming shoryuken (a rising uppercut with a flame surrounding the fist).

Ken stands approximately 6” tall with over 20 points of articulation. He comes with a decent amount of accessories and he’s never looked better, including my old Resaurus Ken, which is saying a lot. SOTA is a great company; their figures are built with quality and not cheap plastic like Toybiz’s Marvel Legends. Not only are they about quality, but they really care about their customers. If you browse some message boards you will notice that SOTA listens to what their customers think and frequently responds to suggestions. People wanted accessory packs and now SOTA plans to make them for each character filled with things that people want to see.

Ken’s sculpt isn’t flawless but in more ways than one, he is near perfect. His face sculpt is well done on both heads but the default SF2/SF3 head needs some work with the hair. Ken

has always been known for his long bangs and SOTA just slightly missed the point of perfection. SOTA, being the company that they are, will probably fix this problem with the SF accessory packs that are coming out in the near future. Ken’s body is very well done and, of course, is very similar to Ryu’s. The most noticeable difference is in the cut sleeves around the shoulder area. Ken’s gi is clean cut and looks like it’s been finished, while Ryu’s has little jagged like unfinished edges (see my Ryu review for picture).

Ken shares the same problem as Ryu. He has a bit of a problem mimicking the hadouken (fireball pose). You can position the body

with no problem, but the arms are a different story. If you absolutely need your Ken to imitate the hadouken, I would make sure he is viewed from the side. It still doesn’t look perfect, but it’s good enough. Having Ken imitate the shoryuken is a lot cooler anyways.

Ken comes with two extra hands, one taunting with his index finger and the other one is a thumbs up. SOTA was also kind enough to base Ken’s alternative head off the Street Fighter Alpha series. He has the long pony tail and red headband (which he later gives to Ryu) but the headband is dressed more like a pretty bow for some strange reason, rather than a headband. The head still looks great and I’m sure many fans like me appreciate the effort. Lastly, Ken comes with a flaming accessory, which attaches to his fists. This is so people can replicate the flaming shoryuken.

Ken’s paint application is perfect. SOTA is great at avoiding bleeding with their paints. He truly is a work of art and if you don’t dig the red gi, you can find variants of Ken that include alternative colors like white, yellow, and purple.

Should you pick up Ken? If you bothered reading through the whole review, it should be obvious by now that this is an amazing figure. Keep in mind that these are only sold through specialty stores (like comic shops) and online retailers. I more than recommend heading to Cornerstorecomics.com. They have great shipping rates and this includes both American and international buyers.
