Lebron James / Carmelo Anthony Boxed Set (McFarlane’s Sports Picks) by McFarlane Toys

McFarlane’s line of Sports Picks figures – from NHL to NFL athletes – always strives for attention to detail and capturing the likeness of the personalities they represent than any kind of playability or imaginative articulation.  And they must sell well because McFarlane is still making them – even creating 2-pack collectible packs.

Here we have a 2-pack of Carmelo Anthony and Lebron James.

Lebron is sculpted in mid-dunk and the attention to detail is very good.  From his tattoos to the way his uniform is stretched, reeks of authenticity.  The facial sculpt is also good but maybe the highlight of the figure is the “real” headband made of red elastic.  (This is in contrast to Carmelo who sports a sculpted headband.)  The headband can be removed completely or dropped in front of his eyes to resemble Neo from the Matrix Revolutions.  Articulation is quite limited in scope and usefulness – to the point where I question why it was included at all.  (McFarlane desperately needs to add some subtle ball-joints to the neck, arms and hips.)

(Incidentally, both Lebron and Carmelo can be installed on the bases packed with the Matrix Revolutions Neo since they all use the same metal pole-pegs to secure them to a base.)

Carmelo meets the same level of detail displayed by Lebron, right down to the tattoos.  A great sense of motion is captured by the way the uniform is sculpted.  All you need is some sweat and you have a complete mini-Carmelo.

As good as the figures are, the centerpiece of any playability comes down to the basketball each holds.  Carmelo’s ball fits in his hand like a big ring.  One side of the ball has a clip that a finger can easily slide into.  A peg in his right hand secures Lebron’s ball.  Both can be lost quite easily, but the diorama possibilities and playability lie with the balls.

NBA fans will not be disappointed with this 2-pack.  They may be a little perturbed that both figures really need the backboard (available only through McFarlane’s Collectors Club) to really look complete.  (The section of floor each figure is displayed on can be plugged into the backboard.)  Casual action figures fans will probably pass off the 2-pack as a novelty; however, they run the risk on losing out on an action figure investment.  If either or both Lebron and Carmelo have 10-year careers (or more) you’re looking at a tidey return if you keep them mint-in-box.
