Master Chief (Halo)

by Joyride Studios

master chief halo

The simple but impressive Master Chief character from Halo has become another in a line of first-person shooter, "behind the gun" cult symbols in gaming. Beginning with the trigger-happy soldier from Wolfenstein, stretching through the years with

Duke Nukem and the Doom Space Marine, the techno-soldier is the latest in these ranks, and a very cool (albeit very simple) character to take on in the best-selling Halo.

Joyride Studios has already produced several versions of the character, beginning with the original Master Chief continuing one with two different colored variants, a

Master Chief Red and today's treat, the Master Chief Green. (Also available is a Battle-Damaged Master Chief, a set of three 3" Master Chiefs with 10 points of articulation!, and later this year a Master Chief Blue.) With all of these awesome Master Chief figures, my only complaint is that there's not enough cool enemies for them to take on -- dig out those Movie Maniac aliens!

Standing a mighty-tall 7 1/2", the Master Chief Green is detailed nicely to make all of his highlights stand out while hiding most of his articulation. Particularly cool is the metallic visor, of which you can see your own reflection! The Chief is fully armed with 18 points of articulation, a suitable amount for the figure: he has ball-jointed arms, peg-jointed legs,
wrists, neck, midsection, biceps, knees, and pin-jointed elbows, knees and feet. This is excellent work from Joyride Studios, a definite improvement from their past video game figures.

While more articulated than the norm, I imagine he'd still be hindered by the robot suit to keep him from being totally flexible, like a Marvel Legend figure. Never-the-less, the Master Chief is full of posability, able to get into a ton of different poses and is ideal for play. He has the slight durability issue of some of the articulation loosening, which will eventually make him less fun.

Technically, both this figure and the original Master Chief figure were green; the difference between the two are the kick-ass accessories. Call this guy "Special Ops" Chief - he comes suited up with a pistol, a handy shotgun, and a rocket launcher. The figure still has difficulty holding his weapons in some poses due to his loose hands, but with some experimentation you can make them work. He looks great toting his shotgun, or crouched on the ground with the missile launcher.

There it is - the Master Chief Green is a joy for Halo fans, a fun figure to stand with the other great Halo figures from Joyride. Multiplayer fans may want to get all of the variants, even the sold-out-and-now-impossible-to-find Active Camouflage Master Chief. Even non-veterans like me can enjoy this figure; the simple but timeless design of the Master Chief makes him stand out with any sci-fi toy. He rocks. Buy!
