Series: Halo
2, 4
Craftsmanship: 9.0 / 10
- Where’s the booty? Figure’s backside looks too small compared to rest of body
- What’s with the underlying gold sparkly paint job?
- Entire suit has a high degree of detail
Playability: 9.0 / 10
- Easily stands by itself without any support
- Posing a sniper shot can be done with a little manipulation
- Needler fits in either hand

Master Chief, Red (Halo2)
by Joyride
Studios

It’s a little strange to see a Halo Spartan in red
armor, since the standard issue of the UNSC is green. But any fan of the
Internet machinima series, Red vs. Blue, will fully appreciate the new Halo 2
Red Spartan from Joytech on the heels of the Blue

allows
you to posture the Red Spartan in a variety of stances.
Arms and legs on the figure also feature plenty of articulation that are helpful
for holding accessories including weaponry and setting up nearly any type of
pose you want. Red Spartan has an excellent balance aspect, in large part to
superior leg articulation and boot design. You can stand him upright easily
without fearing that he’ll fall over at all.
Only one sculpt region doesn’t appear as realistic: the derriere of Red Spartan.
I mean, where’s the booty? It’s just too skinny to fit in proportionately with
the rest of the figure’s body parts.
Playability for Red Spartan is high. He’s perfectly suited for heavy play
sessions for anybody that has a few Joytech Halo 2 figures. Red Spartan can be
placed in a driving stance, suited for driving around the Joytech Warthog
vehicle. He doesn’t quite fit with other toy lines’ vehicles and modes of
transportation, however. My 7-year-old daughter took to driving Red Spartan
around in her Barbie Volkswagen Beetle, and he looked like a little child in the
driver’s seat who couldn’t see over the dashboard. Red Spartan appeared puny on
a Barbie horse too. But if you stick to using him with the Joytech Halo 2
figures, he’s a perfect size.
The red paint job applied to Red Spartan is very close to the same exact color
seen on red-colored Spartans in Halo 2 online play. The copper-gold visor is an
excellent touch with a shiny, mirror-smooth reflective quality. I thought it was
bizarre, however, that Joytech uses a hint of gold sparkles all over the entire
red coating of the figure.
Accessories included with Red Spartan are a Sniper Rifle, Assault Bomb and
Needler. The Sniper Rifle isn’t as snug a fit in Red Spartan’s hands (his right
mitt featuring a noticeable trigger finger) as the Needler. It has an easily
lost (which I did) mount for sniping from a lying down position, and also a
removable ammo clip (that stays in place much better than the gun mount). The
Needler isn’t up to the detail level of the Sniper Rifle, but is satisfactory.
What is a cool little feature of the Assault Bomb is the little message written
on it for its intended victims: “Thus I refute thee.”
Red Spartan is a solidly designed Halo 2 figure that will fit right in with any
Halo 2 figure collection.
