Napoleon Dynamite, Tetherball Champ by McFarlane Toys

"Hey, Summer.  Wanna play me?"

Without a character like Napoleon Dynamite spouting the line it just wouldn't be funny.  The film from which the figures are devised is full of such innocuous dialogue that the words, taken on their own, lack the kind of hilarity that comes across when you're watching the film.  In the case of this action figure/collectible, Napoleon Dynamite, Tetherball Champ, McFarlane has included a couple of lines from the film.

The base is about the size of an (original) iPod so two lines of dialogue may be a bit of a let down. (The other is "Yes, yes, yes.")  However, it should be noted that it takes "AAA" batteries (not included) rather than the hard-to-find watch-type batteries that are a pain in the neck to deal with.

Setting up the base is simple process of putting the tetherball pole together, then sticking it into the base, through a concrete-filled tire.  There is a peg near the front right corner which Napoleon's right foot plugs into and keeps him standing solidly. (Without the securing peg I have yet to keep him standing for more than a split second.)  Together this means that Napoleon is basically a statue -- once in place there's not much to do other than press the button to hear the couple of lines of dialogue.

The sculpt is great but the like Napoleon in "Vote for Pedro" t-shirt, the glasses don't look right.  They're supposed to be silver frames but here they're gold.  The application is equally is good.  This is very fortunate since the figure can't be changed up to any "fresh" degree.  There are seam joints at the top of his boots and at his biceps.  While I always like seeing articulation in a figure, when it's a figure that doesn't benefit at all from the articulation I lament the figure maker couldn't have done more with the figure.  That's the situation with Napoleon, Tetherball Champ. Why bother with the articulation if I can't put it to any practical use.

Playability is anemic at best.  It's in proportion to the other Napoleon Dynamite figures so dioramas are a possibility.  (What we really need is a Summer figure to go with this!)  Because of the stance Napoleon is sculpted into and the poor articulation, there just isn't the option to actually play with him.  The tetherball could have been a source of playability but because the rope is actually a wire you can't play with it.  Games of mini-tetherball could have been fun!

For the entire Napoleon Dynamite line I can see the after-market prices going up and if you saw The 40-Year Old Virgin you know this purchase could pay off years from now.  However, if you want to open your action figures and appreciate the details, Napoleon Dynamite is still a great purchase for fans of the film.
