Napoleon Dynamite in "Vote for Pedro" T-Shirt
by McFarlane
Toys

Napoleon Dynamite is probably the last film I ever
expected to produce a series of action figures. But here we are about a year
after the release of the off-beat
|

|
sculpt
is taken from Napoleon's climatic dance near the end of the movie and the pose
is striking. It can't be altered that much -- he has seam articulation at the
calves, left shoulder, right bicep, left hip, and neck -- so basically, what you
see is what you get. Plug his right foot into the base and you're set.
After installing two AAA batteries (not included) pressing the black button on
the base activates the phrases. The audio is pretty good and Napoleon can be
heard to say: "Gosh", "Freakin' idiot" and (may favorite) "This one gang kept
wanting me to join because I'm pretty good with a bo staff."
The sculpt is very detailed. Besides the detail of Napoleon's haircut, the
"hang" of his t-shirt is fantastic. Even better is the fact that the "Vote for
Pedro" on his t-shirt rolls accurately with the wrinkles. Napoleon's boots also
got enough attention to elevate the sculpt to "awesome." Capturing Napoleon's
dopey look was probably a challenge, but McFarlane has risen to the occasion to
snag the exact likeness from the film (as played by Jon Heder). I'm not
particularly impressed with the glasses though. The frames seem to be too thick
and they are the wrong color. Here they're gold but the source material reveals
silver frames. In comparison to the rest of the detail bestowed upon the figure
it's a bit of an oversight. (It's possible this could be an early production run
figure that falls into the "variant" category.)
Napoleon comes packed with a Walkman and a small, transparent cassette tape. The
Walkman is a fine accessory but the cassette tape you will likely lose before
you even realize it's included with the figure. Save time and worry, just throw
it in the garbage. Or glue it to the base. There's no safe place to store it so
it will always be "loose."
Because of the sculpt and positioning of the articulation points there's not
much in the way of playability. That's okay as long you're not expecting a super
poseable Napoleon Dynamite and given McFarlane's past movie licenses -- Austin
Powers, X-Files, The Matrix, etc. -- you knew playability wouldn't be priority
#1. As with most movie licensed products (no matter which company produces them)
priority #1 is always getting the likeness correct. That said, Napoleon is in
comparable proportion to the other Napoleon Dynamite figures so with a bit of
imagination and the right set you could design some diorama fun.
Is Napoleon Dynamite with "Vote for Pedro" T-Shirt worth the money? For fans,
there's no better way to express your love of the movie. For casual movie
memorabilia collectors, it's also worth the money because you're likely to see
the price continually rise -- cult favorites tend to do that and Napoleon
Dynamite is already a cult favorite even though a relatively short time has gone
by since it's initial release.
