FAO Scwhartz Exclusive Deluxe Poacher by McFarlane Toys

This is a repackaging of Poacher from the short-lived Total Chaos line from McFarlane Toys. For a repackaged action figure, Poacher is actually pretty good.

The sculpt is imaginative. If an elephant ever mutated and took up hunting this is what it would look like. One of his tusks is broken, he’s got several piercing and his nails are cracked and jagged. He looks bad-ass, especially since his ears have been sheared off. (And I thought the tusks were the most sought after part of an elephant.) The paint job is very good, which is an accomplishment considering the amount of detail. Articulation is just right. The left hand is open with a small hole in the palm, which a corresponding peg in the massive rifle fits into. The right hand is clenched in a fist, and can hold a variety of the accessories, but what looks the best is the ornate axe. Molded into his back is small backpack that is just large enough to accommodate several bones. Poacher’s feet are big – so big you should never have a problem getting him to stand.

As a display piece there are only a few figures that can compete. Part of the reason is due to the fish tank display case. The tank has lights wired into the lid. To get the full effect all the room lights must be turned out. The background is of green foliage and perfectly situates Poacher. The display case can also be mounted on the wall. Displaying Poacher in such a way helps avoid losing any of the many accessories. In terms of play value, major points have to be deducted because of the accessories – they are many and they are small. They are just too easy to lose! The figure itself holds up well to rough play. after a variety of vigorous tests (using him for skeet shooting practice, etc.), Poacher kept all his limbs and didn’t lose any paint.

Overall, a good repackaged figure, which can be hard to find on the secondary market. Display features are many (especially for taxidermy shops) and playability is fairly high, although it would have been higher if there weren’t so many little skulls and bones to keep track of.
