Raven Spawn (Spawn Reborn)

by McFarlane Toys

raven spawn

Raven Spawn was one of my favorite figures from 2002. One of the cooler figures from the unique Alternate Realities Spawn line, Raven is a death knight based on characters from the Hellspawn comic. A dark figure, slightly shorter than other Spawn figures, but truly an individual - the repaint offered in the new Spawn Series Reborn is a great addition to any figure collection, giving us a new Raven Spawn to admire and display.

Standing 6 1/2" tall, Raven Spawn is a sharp figure - covered in bony spikes and other Spawn insignia, it's a very well sculpted toy. Raven's torso is covered by a hood made of soft plastic, with raven-like pieces all over which run all the way up to his skull-head, creating something of a helmet to partially hide his grim skinless face. His limbs are sculpted with armor pieces and sharp spines all over, his enormous hands complete with big claws to wield his axe. And once again, Raven Spawn has a perfectly sculpted, toned ass. I dig that ass. Pretending I didn't just say that, Raven Spawn is an awesome figure, and his new paint scheme is not just as good as the original, but is possibly better.

A sharp mix of metals, dark blacks and reds, the new Raven is colored to highlight his claws and spikes with metallics over his black body and dark red armor. It gels perfectly; even his awesome skull and glowing eyes still shine out, with little overspray or problems with the paint anywhere. The new Raven's paint job highlights his nifty skull-belt-thingy, which now appears to be bleeding from the top, and overall appears brighter than the somewhat dull original - together, they're a sight to behold.

As for playability, the new Raven suffers from the same problems as the original. Even with the

lonely-but-cool accessory, the large axe, there's not a lot of room for arm movement due to the hood. Raven Spawn has 14 places of articulation, a worthy amount, but there's only so much he can do with it. With lots of arm and leg movement, there's a little room for play, but it can only go so far, especially with all of those big spikes.

As mentioned, Raven only has one accessory - his axe. It's long and well detailed, but it's fragile, and it's the only thing Raven can attack with, but it's ever so suitable. The insignia and design is perfect to the Raven, and it fits into his hands in several ways, making it ideal for playing and posing with. He also has a chain belt with a couple of weapons on it ripped straight off from the Tortured Souls, but they're not removable so not worth mentioning.

Overall, Raven Spawn is a great figure and a great repaint. If you liked the original or you sadly missed it, this is the chance you've been waiting for.
