Wings of Redemption Spawn (Spawn 21) by McFarlane Toys

Try standing Wings of Redemption Spawn.  Go ahead.

Oh, he fell over?  Get used to it!  Redemption Spawn will spend more time flat on his back than standing up due to two fundamental (and very annoying) flaws with his wings.  The wings are heavy and too long (don't let the picture fool you) – especially the right one – which brings down Redemption Spawn’s balance.  There are ways to overcome this flaw but you have to be creative.  The easiest way to keep him standing is to turn his right foot 180 degrees (so it looks like his ankle is horribly broken).  To correct this tendency lean him against a wall or better still use some fish line to rig him from the ceiling.

R. Spawn is a very cool looking figure – one of the coolest Spawn figures to date.  It’s based on the cover of Spawn issue #77 and has captured the essence very well.  The sculpt and detail are both extremely good – the “feathered” costume and wings bring this figure up a notch or two.  Articulation points number 11 but those in the legs have limited use since they

throw off the balance even more.  The good news is that the arm and neck articulation allows many different poses to be struck – all looking heroic (probably owed to the wings) and like he should be painted on the ceiling of the Vatican.

If you’re looking for playability, R. Spawn is a good bet.  I mean, c’mon – he’s got wings!  Their heavy rubber construction is a great aid in avoiding premature destruction.  The glue that secures the wings to his back is very strong so ripping the wings off is tough to do.  They also act as a cushion to sudden stops – like when he hits walls.  Even

though I’m well out of childhood, I couldn’t resist flinging R. Spawn around. (It’s all part of the rigorous testing phase, I tell my wife.)  The seamed shoulder articulation allows easy positioning to the classic “up, up, and away” stance.  Unlike a lot of Spawn toys, R. Spawn is moderately durable, but he takes a few hits when it comes to the trademark spiked arm and leg gauntlets.  They’re tough little buggers and can actually cause damage.  (Obvious hint: Don’t step on him.)

Even with the flawed wings, Redemption Spawn is a must have for collectors.  And since he doesn’t come with accessories (no choking hazards) and is obviously meant to be played with, he’s also good for kids.
