Resort Smithers (The Simpsons) by Playmates

Nothing quite shouts, “Smithers!” as pastel colors and a purple suitcase.  And that’s exactly what we get with Resort Smithers.

Playmates almost has the Simpsons line down to a science now – perfectly translating one-dimensional cartoon characters into 3D plastic.  They’ve done it again with Resort Smithers even though he only appears in this particular get-up in one episode (according to my spotty memory).  The sculpt is very good – like I said, this is practically a science now – and the color scheme and application is very good.  Actually, he’s eye-catching – the colors I’m talking about.  The one problem I have with the sculpt is the bent right arm to accommodate a “talking on the phone” pose.

It’s only a vague “talking on the phone” pose since it doesn’t actually bring the receiver close to his head.  The arm should have straightened a bit to facilitate this pose as well as enable him to hold his bag of pineapples and suitcase at the same time.

Accessories are great, except for the phone and his glasses.  Moe came packed with a phone and I had the same problem with that phone as I do with this one.  There’s nothing included to help stand the phone.  If you have a playset you can always stick it to a wall, otherwise

you’re tasked with arranging some kind of prop to make it look like it’s mounted to a wall.  His glasses will get lost almost immediately if you don’t glue them on.  Removeable glass are fine, but when there’s no way to secure them – by pegs or whatever – you’re just asking for trouble.

As part of the Simpsons line, Resort Smithers fits right in with the rest of the figures making him highly playable and adding value to the rest of your collection.  The accessories can be lost easily but as always with the Simpsons line, most of the accessories are cross compatible so you should never

run out of things for your characters to hold and be displayed with.  Like the other figures, he’s durable too so he’s in no danger of falling to pieces under rough play.

For display, he’ll snap into any of the Intelli-Tronic bases (or stands easily and firmly on his own).  He works with 6 of the bases, saying things like, “Here’s Bobo hot from the dryer” but check the cardback to see if you’ve got a compatible base.

If you’re a collector, this one’s a no-brainer – grab Resort Smithers now.  If you’re just in it for play value, Smithers fits right in.
