RL3 (Interlink Spawn)

by McFarlane Toys

Not only is RL3 one of the low guys on the totem pole, the rest of the Interlink gang voted him "the most likely to be Camel Boy’s successor." But before you start weeping for him and getting your cheque book out to donate some money to his college fund, please realize that he’s a piece of plastic!

RL3 is full of paradox. He’s lots of fun to play with, but he probably has the most parts to lose. The most essential parts in forming Interlink Spawn (the back-mounted jet-packs) are really easy to lose. They slide in and out of their sockets very easily, almost too easily, and without them Interlink Spawn doesn’t have a leg to stand on. (But the jet-packs make it so much fun to play with!) RL3’s arms are removable as well. Thankfully, the pegs securing them are fairly long so the arms won’t accidentally fall out. Only two other pieces of RL3 can be lost: the projectile fired from his right hand and a backplate. The projectile is a big disappointment compared to the distance achieved by LL4’s launcher. The same firing

method is used (pull it back and let it go) but the missile only shoots about seven inches. It eliminates the danger of being lost somewhere across the room, but it is small so the danger of losing it isn’t totally gone. The "shin pad" leggings are hinged to his legs so there’s no way they can be lost. Articulation is first rate, coming in around 16 points. Poseability is high, as is stability. RL3’s knees bend the opposite way that you would expect. Coupled with the way his head is sculpted, the effect is not unlike that of a quasi-camel creature that, with a few modifications, could have been part of the Techno Spawn series. RL3 fits right in with the other Interlink figures. (Duh!)

Technically, RL3 ranks fairly high. The sculpt is good, with an emphasis on the head and exo-skeleton ribcage. The articulation points are integrated well, and the fact he’s a robot is used to his advantage. His left hand looks like it was initially supposed to have articulated fingers, but that’s a minor point. I really like the gold coloring of RL3 – it creates an even stronger sense that he could have been a camel. The hoses located on his torso and coming out the back of his head are good accents, even though they are easily snapped off under rough play. He won’t disappoint if you just want to display him. Just don’t be surprised when people ask why you’ve got a bizarre metallic camel on your desk.
