Savage Dragon by McFarlane Toys

savage dragon

Savage Dragon got short-changed.  In comparison to the other Image 10th Anniversary figures – Spawn, Ripclaw, Shadow Hawk – with their trim lines and spectacular color, Savage Dragon looks like he just dragged himself from a dumpster and showered in street grime.  While this definitely makes him a bit more gritty, he just seems slightly out of place with the other figures.

That being said, Dragon’s still a pretty cool figure even with the “chicken legs” factor.

He stands about 7” tall and comes packed with a stand decorated like a crumbled section of alley.  Instead of rigorous hard plastic the base is rubbery.  There is at least one flaw with the base: only one peg to plug Dragon into.  Dragon is top-heavy (surprise!) and although the one peg is pretty good at keeping him standing in most poses he gradually leans forward then topples off the base.  He can be posed without the base, but that makes him even more unstable.

Even though he doesn’t have many articulation points, thanks to the well-masked ball-jointed shoulders there is a good poseability.  The torso joint doesn’t make much sense, but I have

the feeling it might be jammed or glued rendering it immovable.  The seam joints at his thighs likewise don’t make much sense since there isn’t any other articulation in the legs – the legs should have been solid.

The attention to detail is good and Dragon’s likeness is dead-on.  The muscled arms and

steely gaze, accented with the square jaw – Dragon just screams “superhero!”  And the high McFarlane Toys standards are met in terms of texture.

If you play with your toys, beware Dragon’s chicken legs.  They don’t just look breakable, they

are breakable.  Or at the very least, they’ll pop out.  Rough play isn’t encouraged.  Also of note is the way his head fin can be bent or otherwise mangled.  Straightening it out is difficult. (Make a mental note of this if he gets put into storage.)  On the upside, he’s a superhero toy and is quite proportional to many other action figures, besides the 10th Anniversary figures.  He looks like the Incredible Hulk’s cousin so there are all kinds of diorama possibilities.

Comic fans will have already snapped Dragon up and will be happy with their purchase.  But for other collectors, Savage Dragon is a good buy – one that’s likely to garner a solid after-market price. (Remember, “likely” is not the same as “guaranteed”.)
