Savage She-Hulk from Diamond Select Toys

savage she-hulk

We should be clear on one thing. Although this version of She-Hulk is garbed in the white tatters of her original appearance (Savage She-Hulk #1), to call it "savage" is misleading at best and an outright lie at worst.

Savage She-Hulk is a slightly modified version of the same figure that Diamond Select produced with She-Hulk posing in a Fantastic Four uniform. That would

explain the big hair. "Savage" is in name only. There's no sign of the stringy black mop of hair, with that crazed look in her eye, or the menacing pose of an animal about to strike. It's just a little disappointing but the huge box it comes packed in makes it very clear what you're getting so it shouldn't be a surprise.

from the box and Styrofoam sarcophagus and it's ready for display.

Without the substantial base, She-Hulk would be a couple inches shorter, but included, the statue is approximately 15" inches tall. The rectangular footprint of the base is relatively narrow, making it easier to display on the fireplace mantle -- not that your significant other would ever let you put it there. It's more of a
savage she-hulk hypothetical scenario, but it will fit on narrow surfaces. The classic Charles Atlas pose of She-Hulk neatly conforms to the footprint as well.

One of the reasons I like these statue collectibles is that the sculptors tend to make full use and advantage of the entire canvas. With action figures, the designers are often handcuffed in what they can do by articulation points and sticking to the
source material on a small scale. While She-Hulk isn't quite in the range of just having jumped off the page of a comic book (like Sideshow Collectibles more recent statue), the detail is good and should be readily recognized even by the most comic-ignorant onlookers. The lines and curves of the muscles give She-Hulk an almost "realistic" appearance. I mean, outside of the fact she's green and has bigger breasts than a female body builder of the same build.

The facial detail is good, too. The eyes seem just slightly "off" -- it's hard to put my finger on it. It's not a 1000-mile stare, but it doesn't look quite natural. The same
savage she-hulkcan be said of the expression. It's as if the sculptor had solid three-dimensional reference for the body, but lacked that same source for the face.

It should also be noted that this limited edition (1,000 pieces were produced; individually signed and numbered) can be had for less than the $150US most of the online retailers and specialty shops sell it for. I grabbed mine at a specialty shop for almost half that price.

And at the end of the day, I feel like I got a great deal on a statue that's a great addition to my collection.
