Spawn V (Spawn 17R)

by McFarlane Toys

People just can’t get enough Spawn. He’s such a bad-ass hero, he’s hard not to like. If you’re looking for a good likeness for display, Spawn V is a good investment.

Spawn V’s sculpt is based on drawings by Frank Capullo (Creech) and is one of the best action figures of Spawn to date. The muscles are rippled, the gauntlets spiked and the chin jutted forward. The paint job is good – there’s not much to screw up – but there can be some discoloration on the back from the cape rubbing against it. He’s in a "Shakespeare" pose – a dramatic, looking-into-the-future stance. The most obvious difference with the original Spawn V is the sculpting of the left leg. The original was bent to accommodate his foot resting on a pile of skulls. The left leg on the R3 is more or less straight. The base ensures that Spawn V won’t ever fall over. He can stand without the aid of the base, which might be a good thing if you don’t want to strain yourself pegging his right leg in. Maybe the peg was too big, maybe the hole was too small – I’m not exactly sure which – but he was damn hard to peg in. But once he was taken on and off a few times, pegging him in got a lot easier. The cape is perfect. It creates the illusion of wind and is Spawn’s best accessory. Part of the cape can be put into his left hand, giving it that extra "oomph" of style. But it’s molded

that way so you don’t have much of a choice. There is a peg on the cape that fits into a hole in his back to give some extra security. This peg snaps off easily so be careful if you’re taking off and putting the cape on! Most of the weight rests on the shoulders. Another good addition is that of the lengthy chains coming from his waist. They’re long enough to be wrapped around legs and arms very easily.

Playabilty . . . there’s not much here. There are only four points of articulation and the stance doesn’t give much room for imagination. Snapping (or breaking) the chains is very easy. So, actually getting much play out of this figure is low.

If you’re a fan and you’re looking for an excellent display piece, you can do no wrong with Spawn V. He’s perfect for display, with or without the base, and his pose is excellent – he just oozes cool. But if you’re more interested in actually playing with your toys you may want to pass.
