Ultimate Weapon (Final Fantasy X) by Koto Inc. / ARTFX

Ultimate Weapon

I’ve never been physically harmed by an action figure.  Sure, I’ve stepped on them, tripped, slipped, and fallen on them, but there’s never been any lasting damage.  Ultimate Weapon, really is an ultimate weapon – it managed to cut a two inch slash into the outside edge of my right pinky finger.  Not only did it cut me, but I didn’t notice I’d been cut until 40 minutes had elapsed and saw the blood all over everything I’d touched during that time.

The playability score would have been a lot higher had the pointy bits been not quite so pointy.  The sculpt allows Ultimate Weapon to be ridden like a horse by a wide assortment of action figures – from GI Joes to He-man to Lord of the Rings – so he gets big points for this feature.  He has only 5 points of articulation – in the arms and neck – so he manages to be quite durable.  Now if only he didn’t have so many points…

The points are true to Ultimate Weapon’s videogame counterpart, as is the sculpt and paint job.  The sculpt has retained the hieroglyphic tattoos from the videogame and is a very good sculpt overall with minor details given the same attention as the more prominent features.

Color scheme is direct from the game as well – the pink on gray makes him stand out quite well when on display (and could be construed as an action figure for girls).  If you want radically different poses you’re out of luck.  As mentioned above his articulation is limited and is rendered even more difficult thanks to the horns out his back.  His legs could have been given more articulation – a few hinge joints would have done much for the poseability.  As he is, Ultimate Weapon is extremely stable.  Knocking him down is nigh impossible – short of hitting him with a baseball bat he’ll stay wherever you choose to put him.

Since no one can have just one of a series, Ultimate Weapon will probably find himself in the company of at least one other Final Fantasy X figure.  The figures may not quite be to scale with each other, but it certainly makes sense to display them together.  Of all the figures, Ultimate Weapon best qualifies as being the token animal figure. (Sure, Yojimbo comes with a small lion, but other action figures can’t ride it.)  This means he may not get the attention of discerning collectors (“Who wants an animal sidekick?”) but that doesn’t mean Ultimate Weapon should be ignored.

While Ultimate Weapon’s playability could have been much higher, he’s a solid display piece.  And even though he’s not very poseable, he makes up for this by being able to act as a steed to many action figures, heightening his display (and play) factor.
