Water Clan Dragon (McFarlane's Dragons) by McFarlane Toys

water clan dragon

When I got my hands on the deluxe Cave Dragon with Human Attacker, I knew McFarlane’s Dragons was going to please me.  Not so much for being highly playable action figures but for the shear coolness of extremely detailed dragons that won’t shatter if they hit the ground.

If you’re expecting articulation and poseability, the Water Clan Dragon will disappoint you, as will the rest of the line.  They barely offer token articulation.  McFarlane’s Dragons are all about looking good.

Have an aquarium of own a bait shop?  Water Clan Dragon is a perfect, particularly if you have the Sea Creature from McFarlane’s Monsters.  The dragon shares a lot in common with the Sea Creature in overall composition.  Besides being extremely detailed, the Water Clan Dragon features a mostly translucent plastic body, which produces a cool effect when backlit.  After he’s been installed on the detailed base there’s not much you can do – besides immersing him in water – to keep him fresh.  There are two points of articulation: a seam where the tail plugs into the body and at the base of the neck.  Both offer little in terms of mobility.  What you see is what you get.

Stability is excellent.  He pegs into the base with one foot peg installed into the base, and three pegs coming off the base plug into his remaining feet.

Playability is nil.  Not only because it doesn’t offer any useful poseability, but also because it features some extremely pointy bits – I’m talking pointy!  I don’t perform the balloon test very often because it takes too long to blow up the balloons but with Water Clan Dragon I had to satisfy my curiosity.  Like some kind of inverted pin cushion I popped seven out of ten balloons on it.  So, the lesson here is that if you do choose to play with this figure, have the band-aids ready.

Lastly, McFarlane has again made use of the clamshell inserts to tell

a story (as was done with McFarlane’s Monsters, Twisted Land of Oz line).  The story is broken into five parts and provides a “history” as to how man ascended to dominance over the advanced dragon civilization.  Water Clan Dragon comes packed with part five (of five).
