Wings
of Redemption Spawn (Spawn Reborn)
by McFarlane Toys
My
biggest gripe with the original Wings of Redemption Spawn was the fact
he was impossible to free-stand.He
had to lean on something or plug him into a stabilizing display disk. This was thanks to the feathered wings that extended further than
Spawn’s feet.It blew my
mind that the biggest feature of the figure was its biggest liability,
no matter how cool they looked. This
version addresses the original’s problem with smaller, scaly,
dragon-like wings that have about and inch of clearance. So now he can free-stand!
Other
than the wings, not much else has been changed. The
articulation is still poor – not that Spawn lacks articulation, but
it’s not useful, especially the joints in the legs. It’s great that it’s there, but if you move them around he
won’t remain standing. The upper joints are
more useful in terms of positioning him
in different poses, but they seem awkward.A few ball and hinge joints would have really kicked the figure
up a notch.
The
sculpt is remains good – the large and small details are excellent –
but it’s the sculpt that makes Spawn more of a collector’s display
piece than an “action” figure.
However,
it can’t have escaped your notice that he has wings. (Gasp!)By default this makes Wings of Redemption Spawn a flying toy.I wouldn’t recommend he be thrown at all because of

the sharp
points and the rigid wings.The
previous version’s feathered wings were made of soft rubber making it
a friendlier flying toy.An
upside to this one is that he’s about the same size of just about
every other Spawn figure released in the last few years, which allows
for more playability and dioramas. (Those soap opera moments of twin
Wings of Redemption Spawns – one evil, one good – hitting on the
same woman.)But once
again, with the sculpt it limits what you can do with the figure.
When
the two versions are compared I tend to favor the new version, simply
for the fact he can stand up.If
you missed the original, it’s worth a look.
