Xenia Onatopp (GoldenEye)

by Sideshow Collectibles

xenia onatopp goldeneye

Xenia Onatopp wore many different outfits in GoldenEye (incidentally a movie that inspired one of the best console shooters ever), but Sideshow decided to put Xenia in her fishnet top and commando pants see near the end of the film.  Unfortunately, her facial sculpt demonstrates benign indifference instead of the evil/psychotic smiling she also wore.

The head sculpt is generally good, but I wouldn’t call it great.  Viewed head-on, she’s not that recognizable as Xenia; however, viewed in profile or from the side she’s the spitting image of Xenia (played so well by Famke Janssen in the film).

The clothing and accessories are first rate, particularly the delicate AK-47 machine gun, which features a real cloth strap, removable ammo clip (with sculpted bullets at the top), and folding stock.  Sideshow did a good job with the clothing.  Although the action figure isn’t quite as curvy as the real Famke Janssen, it does a good job filling out the costume including the strapless bra.  The top also does a great job hiding the articulation.  Special mention has to be made of the boots.  Instead of sculpting the same boot and just doing a mirror image of it, each boot has been individually sculpted.  During any kind of play you’ll be worried about tearing the clothes or worse, ripping off her ponytail.  This is one area where I wish Sideshow had gone the extra mile and given Xenia “real” hair.  If Barbie can do it, why can’t Xenia?

Xenia’s paint application is good – actually, it looked a little thick in the make-up department.  I had to re-watch GoldenEye (research is so tough when it comes to action figures!) and Xenia really does wear that much make-up.

As with all of Sideshow’s 12” figures, Xenia is extremely poseable and the included support base encourages manipulating her into all sorts of cool action poses.  She has in the neighborhood of 30 points of articulation and all of them are stiff enough to hold whatever position I put them in, with one exception: the left wrist.  I have no idea what happened with it, but it’s so loose it will actually jiggle when anyone walks by.  It doesn’t affect its mobility though so I can’t really deduct points.

Re-enacting the pivotal fight scene near the end of GoldenEye is a very real diorama possibility.  Otherwise, I wouldn’t really recommend playing with Xenia, though the overall playability it relatively high.  Xenia has very good compatibility with any 12” figure but because of the clothing issue and the comparatively fragile AK-47, I’d recommend her only for diorama or very minimal play.

A true Bond fan will already own Xenia Onatopp, but if you’re looking for a solid Bond collectible and a female villain, get your wallet out.
