Yagyu Jubei (Onimusha 2)

by McFarlane Toys

yagyu jubei action figure review

From the upcoming Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny, the main character and samurai warrior Yagyu Jubei is one of the most popular in McFarlane Toy's action figure series of the same name. And not without good reason – besides the great sculpting for which McFarlane has set its standard, Jubei features a wonderful amount of articulation and poseability, as well as an armory to make the most bloodthirsty samurai proud.

Standing 6" tall, Jubei is decorated in some of the coolest samurai clothing to date. Of particular notice is his sweet samurai jacket, decorated in insignia and flames, which would have a nice high street value if it were real. The detail all over Jubei is accurate and very appealing; the mesh of colors is awesome, particularly the stunning reds, dark blues and golds. The paint application is good all over, with no smudges or overspill. The likeness to the videogame character is also very high – and Jubei is quite the bad-ass, with a mean attack expression on his face.

Jubei is articulated something nice; with what Omni calls the MGS2 articulation, Jubei weighs in with 19 points of articulation. His shoulders, legs and ankles are complete with ball-joints, although the movement of the shoulder joints is limited due to his shoulder pads. The rest of his articulation is a symmetrical blend of cut and peg joints, which work well to get Jubei into a few nice poses – although having only one hand to hold weapons, his left, is annoying. His other hand has a strange black symbol in the wrist, which I imagine has significance in the game, but is unable to hold anything. An interchangeable hand which could hold weapons would have solved this and made Jubei more playable and poseable. Another important

point to his articulation is how durable he seems compared to other McToys. Even with all of his joints and armor pads nice and solid -- he's able to stand up to some heavy play.

Accessories is where Jubei really stands out in this line. Although other figures from Onimusha 2 have maybe a couple of weapons, Jubei has a full arsenal. To begin with, he carries an awesome samurai sword and scabbard; the scabbard has a strap that fastens around Jubei's waste to fit in a nook in his jacket. The sword can be separated into three pieces; the handle separates into two to fit

in Jubei's hand, and the blade attaches them together – he looks awesome wielding it, and so he should, considering it's the only weapon of his he can actually hold. This is a bit of a waste, considering all of his other weapons, but since he looks so bad-ass it's okay. Secondly, Jubei has a gold-handled double-pointed battle sword, which looks awesome and deadly. Even though Jubei can't handle it, it would look great with another figure. Also included is a nice long spear, with pointed spikes at either end, and a large two-bladed battle staff, which looks like it could be wielded or thrown Xena-style. Finally, Jubei has a nice bow and arrow set, with real string for the bow and a double-pointed arrow that actually fires – a nice yet scary addition for the samurai warrior. If kids weren't careful with this, I imagine they'd easily put out an eye, as the arrow shoots at the speed of light, able to topple heavy figures with a single shot. Either way, Jubei supports a nice lot of weapons, able to arm an army of your figures; and for these alone, Jubei is worth getting.

If you're only getting one Onimusha figure for your collection, I'd much recommend Jubei. Although his playability is somewhat stunted by only having one hand able to hold his sword and not having him able to hold any of his other weapons, he's still got some poseability left in him and he looks nice amongst other samurai figures (the Samurai Spawn figure series, for example). His other weapons can be used for other figures or just kept for his own little samurai arsenal – overall, this is a fine figure and a must for Onimusha and Samurai fans.
