Yojimbo (Final Fantasy X)

by Koto Inc. / ARTFX

Samurai come in all shapes and sizes.  Yojimbo comes in the size, shape, and style of an art deco explosion with a few touches from architect Frank L. Wright – Yojimbo’s one wild looking figure.

In terms of video game likeness, ARTFX and Koto Inc. have done it again – Yojimbo is very faithful to his digital likeness right down to his lion/dog sidekick.  What else is there to say?  Just look at him!  The sculpt is great, front and back.  Two details I really like: his sleeves have been given texture and his shock of white hair flowing behind him gives the impression of wind.  The big sword, complete with scabbard, is a perfect match and fit for Yojimbo’s

sculpt.  The scabbard fits in one hand and the sword fits in the other.  A second sword pegs into his hip and a small dagger has no place to go (at least, I couldn’t find a place), so you’re likely to lose it.

The paint job is a wicked combination of red, gold, purple, yellow, magenta, and white.  Oversplash in non-existent, even on the lighting bolt around the fringe of his cloak.

Stability is no problem.  On the base, Yojimbo is extremely solid.  The same can be said of the unarticulated sidekick, which is sculpted to have all four paws on

the ground but still looks like he’s about to attack.  Yojimbo can’t be given radically different poses.  Actually, the only articulation available is in the arms, and each has limited mobility due to the cloak.

By now you should be able to figure out what I’m going to say about playability.  It’s not high and is only saved by the animal sidekick.  He’s extremely tough and compatible with GI Joes (they can ride on his back).  This guy can go in the garden, the bathtub, the living room – he can go anywhere.  Yojimbo himself… do not play with Yojimbo.  His “hat” is very easy to snap off (trust me on this point) and his hands and elbows are easy to break as well.  His cloak is not removable, even though it looks like it should be.  Overall, he’s so immobile that he’s a little more than a statue (a great looking statue, mind you).  The sidekick however… let the good times roll!

Yojimbo’s an extremely nice display piece for collectors and Final Fantasy fanatics.  He’s a great video game action figure with a good paint job and dead-on accessories.  But if you want to play with your toys, don’t bother (unless you really want his animal sidekick), he’s just too fragile and immobile.
