Aliens vs. Predator
Hardcore AvP fans will know that the idea of pitting two of the greatest sci-fi creatures ever imagined against each other is not new. Gamers had the opportunity to take the mighty Predator and kick some Alien butt in the early nineties thanks to Activision. The arcade version of this game rocked. You got to choose to play as one of three Predators. These were, an average Predator, or the Mario of the bunch, a quick female Predator, and a stronger more powerful Predator. The idea was as simple as all beat ‘em ups. You went around and punched, kicked, hit and threw anything you could get your hands on at anything that moved. There were classic weapons from the Predator movies like the shoulder cannon, the |

spear, and the disc blade. There were chest bursters, face huggers, queens, and drones to kill. The plot also involved the evil company trying to harness the power of the Aliens for military power.
The SNES version of the game, however, offered gamers no choice in which Predator to play as the only choice was to play the Mario Predator. The arcade version was really tough with tons of enemies on screen at once and many instant |

quarter deaths occurring. At home, they toned it down for the console market, and gave the gamer unlimited continues. The graphics stayed as faithful as they could to the arcade original with the limitations of the SNES at the time, and by today’s standards, still look decent. I’m still a big fan of the beat ’em up even though it has become a stale genre today. Aliens vs. Predator is not as fun today as it was when it first came out, but apart from the graphics, it doesn’t seem any worse than the new beat ‘em ups coming out today. - Mark Leung
