Castle of Illusion starring

Mickey Mouse

The Genesis had its fair share of platform jumpers and one of them was Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse (CI).

CI puts you in control of Disney’s most recognizable character – that’s Mickey Mouse – and tasks you with saving Minnie Mouse from the evil Witch Ezmarelda who has taken refuge in . . . The Castle of Illusion! (CI follows tradition by giving a bare bones story.) The castle is one of these places that has doors that open into different dimensions. Some of these dimensions house familiar Disney characters and the whole experience shouldn’t scar anyone. (Unless you’re one of these people that gets freaked out by an anthropomorphized mouse that can throw apples and jump more than three times his height.)

Gameplay is straightforward (jump on enemies, swing on vines, throw apples, etc.) but what makes CI so playable is the ease of control and great graphics. For anyone that played Fantasia (also starring Mickey Mouse) and battled the first-rate crappy control will appreciate how good the control is (when you press jump, Mickey jumps!), plus the graphics are sharper. The younger crowd can

get just as much enjoyment out of CI as the older crowd. The "cute factor" might put older gamers off. The music is especially cute and you’ll probably hit the mute button before you succumb to cuteness and shun Guns and Roses. ("Make it stop. Make it stop!" as Mr. Nash would say.)

Challenge isn’t high. Fighting or avoiding enemies is no problem. Most enemies can simply be avoided – save your apples for the bosses. But if you have to attack, use the old reliable method of dispatching enemies – bouncing butt slams.

A forgettable game by today’s standards, but for those that love Mickey you could do worse.
