Chrono Trigger

Time travel, a strong fleshed out cast, some very interesting plot twists, and downright gorgeous graphics for the time Chrono Trigger was one heck of a game. Even to this day it is still a favorite among console RPG fans. With the complete lack of popularity for RPGs at the time it was bad enough we had to go without Romancing Saga, Live A Live, two episodes of Dragon Warrior and countless other great titles that left many an RPG fan crying themselves to sleep each night, but thankfully Chrono Trigger made it.

From day one the title was being touted as having a veritable dream team working on it. First there was Akira Toriyama, famed creator of the Dragonball series, heading up the character design and artwork for the game. If that wasn’t enough there was also Yuji Horii, Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior here) designer, creating

the scenarios for the game. On top of this there was Yasunori Mitsuda working as the musical composer for the game. Chrono Trigger was a rare treat for gamers, where a juggernaut of a development team was assembled.

The game centered on Chrono as he traveled through time, initially to save a friend, then discovering Lavos, an otherworldly creature out

to rule the world throughout time. While the main thrust of the story was to stop Lavos, players met a huge cast of characters from Frog, who was out to avenge his friend’s death, to Marle, a princess who has a terrible relationship with her father that must be resolved. Battles were played out in real time, and for its time there were some absolutely amazing spell effects.

This was, and is, a fabulous title. From its solid story, to its beautiful aesthetic this is a title to track down in the Flea Markets, garage sales, or any other place where old cartridge games may be sold from time to time.
