Mega Man 2
Every kid worth their weight in Cheerios knows that the coolest games have robot characters. Mega Man 2 has close to a dozen robots. The player guides Mega Man through more than a dozen levels fighting the likes of Heat Man, Wood Man, Crash Man and Air Man. Eventually there is the showdown with Dr. Wiley. Mega Man 2 immediately offers a choice of levels. The levels can be completed in any order, but depending on which weapons you’ve got you might find defeating the level boss more challenging. Fighting Wood Man with the regular peashooter is a lot harder if you haven’t defeated Metal Man. Defeating Metal Man equips you with saw blades which can cut Wood Man down with a few well placed shots. Each weapon acquired from defeated boss enemies handles differently. Crash Man’s exploding charges can take out walls and Air Man’s mini-whirlwinds arc through the sky. |

Beside the eight weapons there are three equipment items: a floating platform, a rocket to ride on, and a bouncing platform. To keep your weapons supplied with power you must collect power packs, which usually appear when an enemy has been vanquished.
The theme of each level is based on the boss that you will be fighting. Air Man’s level has lots of clouds and Bubble Man has many underwater areas. Some of the |

challenge of the game comes from the level design. Bubble Man’s level is a good example. There are lots of depth charges on the walls, floors and ceilings. Touching one means instant death. Same with the lava on Heat Man’s level. Most of these kinds of obstacles are placed in strategic areas to make exact moves and timing necessary. There are lots of jumping puzzles! Too many in fact. You’ll jump, jump, jump getting further through a level only to make a miscalculation and fall into a pit. It can get frustrating attempting the same section over and over again. There are instances of brilliant puzzles that require you to use a combination of equipment and weapons, rendered even more nerve racking since you have limited power for each item in your inventory. Enemy AI is fairly standard. They’ll attack until you or they (or both) are dead. There is a good variety of enemies. Most are easily dispatched, especially if you have the right weapon. The boss characters are devious but aren’t brainiacs. They all have a pattern and if you can recognize the pattern, defeating them is simple. The sound and music is good for a NES game. - Omni
