Truxton
If you’re in the mood for a space shooter, Truxton is a good choice. As with most space shooters you take control of a one-man fighter and face-off against an army of alien baddies. Things start off very simply then the difficulty ramps up and the enemies come fast and furious. The view is top-down with the screen continuously moving from top to bottom. The setup is much like Space Invaders but the player is granted more freedom of movement. There are three different weapons: standard pea-shooter, electrical bolts, and green energy packets. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, the electrical bolt will lock onto the larger enemies. This is helpful when engaging a boss while avoiding its weapon blasts, but can lead to a quick death if more flying enemies appear. There are a couple of power-ups for each weapon. On the third power level it’s fun to watch the aliens get fried almost before they reach |

the screen. Besides the weapons, the player also has bombs at their disposal. (You know, the kind that obliterates all but the most powerful enemies) Engine power-ups are also available which allows for very quick movements (also a catch 22). The mid-level and end bosses are varied and some are incredibly hard to defeat. And there are no cutscenes to break up the action! Thumb crunching is non-stop.

You get three extra ships to start with and the option for unlimited continues. To get to the end unlimited continues have to be used unless you’re a flying ace. And when the game is completed it starts all over and the enemies fly faster and shoot on sight. The graphics are bright and colourful with varying terrain types (space, asteroid, space station, etc.) and different enemies. The only noticeable slowdown occurs when the screen is packed with enemies. The music can become repetitive but it does change and is quite memorable. This is a solid space shooter for the Genesis crowd. Well known cheat: To easily defeat the end and mini-bosses drop a bomb and immediately press pause. The big death head explosion should be on the screen. Wait three seconds then tap start again, to attain a very slow motion effect. Done correctly, one bomb can take out a boss. - Omni
