Journeys in Azeroth XI

Random Junk from the Front

Warning: Throughout this article there will be several spoilers related to World of Warcraft.  If this is a concern to you, please do not read any further.  This is the only spoiler warning you will receive.

This passed week I learned an important lesson when raiding a town: don’t try to hit anything if you’re too low of a level.  One of my guild mates gave me a whisper while I was leveling my shaman out in Desolace that him and a few other guys were going to make a run on Astranaar, and asked if I wanted to come.  I figured what the heck, it would be a nice change of pace.  Unfortunately, I was only level 32 at the time, so even as I hiked over there, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to inflict much damage.

Nonetheless, I trekked on to the graveyard just outside of Astranaar.  If I couldn’t hit hard, and most of my shock spells would end up being resisted, I could at least try and keep some of the other guys’ health in the pink, and maybe buff them a bit with my totems.  We had a warrior and a mage in the group that wound up doing a majority of the damage, and were able to take down the guards quite fast as they spawned.  Unfortunately everyone else was pretty low-level as well, so they wound up just running around trying to kite the additional guards.  I did my best to help

out, but after a while the goofing around got a tad dull, so I moseyed on back to Desolace in search for level 33.

As bleak, and burned out as the landscape is in this region, the area has a surprising amount of personality.  Between the entrepreneurial goblins in the region, the continual conflict between the warring centaur, and Alliance and Horde bases trying to stabilize the region, there is a lot of back-story to enjoy here, and more than enough quests to keep players busy for a week.

I kept myself busy running around helping one of the goblins in Desolace who was trying to setup a new caravan.  Unfortunately, he needed about a half dozen kodo if he wanted to get his new business off the ground.  With that he asked me to take this fancy tool of his, and bring him some of the older kodo in the region.  A short distance from his camp, there are a bunch of these lumbering beast that come here to die, making them easy prey for those doing this quest.  The one thing players at lower levels need to be careful of are swoops in the area that are around level 37, and aggro quite easily.  The best thing to do is stay around the edges of a large pit full of kodo bones, and tame the kodos around these borders.   That way players don’t need to worry about getting jumped by slightly more powerful enemies.

After this, it was time to get involved with the never-ending centaur dispute of the region.  The goal was to kill a bunch of centaur from one of the major clans there so to gain the favor of their rival.  This is by far one of the most time consuming quests in Desolace, as players have to kill a small army of these beasts to get on the good side of their rival.  I remember doing this a while back with my Night Elf rogue, and it seemed to take forever.  Strangely, with my shaman things appear to be going a little quicker.  The bar in my reputation window is moving much quicker this time when doing the quest.  The question now becomes whether this is because I’m using a Horde character as opposed to someone in the Alliance, or did Blizzard tweak this quest a bit in one of their updates.

Over the last week and a bit I’ve done a few other quests too, but it’s been pretty slow since I have a few other AE projects on my plate at the moment.  Despite this, I’m hoping to get my shaman up to level 40 by the end of September at the latest, complete with mount, though I’ve never found Taurens’ leathery mount all that pleasing to the eye.  Between now and next update, I plan to get my shaman up to level 35, and probably spend a fair amount of time in Battle Grounds, so stay tuned.
