This Week's Games

(Week of October 30, 2006)

Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

This is the big one – it’s been a long time coming, but this is the first “true “ Final Fantasy game since 2001, (not counting that online game and the embarrassment that was Final Fantasy X-2.) It’s a drastic reinvention in terms of pretty much everything, which will undoubtedly split the more demanding of fans. Still, the Shakespeare-meets-Star Wars drama looks too awesome to pass up, even if the redeveloped battle system seems relatively hands-off.

Children of Mana (DS)

The latest of Square’s “Mana” series is more of a dungeon crawler than the SNES fan favorite Secret of Mana, but the word is it’s pretty fun for what it is, and has a rather nice art style.

Killzone Liberation (PSP)

I didn’t get to try the demo disc that Sony’s been passing around, but the version

at E3 was infuriatingly hard. It’s cool that Sony’s realized that the first person mechanics of the console games wouldn’t work at all and instead created an overhead shooter reminiscent of old arcade games, but the control and aiming was pretty sloppy, and I got killed, a lot, quite quickly.

Power Stone Collection (PSP)

The classic Dreamcast arena brawlers come to the PSP. The first game isn’t too spectacular, but the second game offered four player madness. It’s not as smooth as the DC versions, but multiplayer is always quite fun. It’s no Super Smash Brothers, but it’s legions better than that Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble.
