This Week's Games

(Week of September 18, 2006)

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

Hey, it’s another Pokemon game. Apparently you actually get to play as a Pokemon in this one instead of just commanding them. There’s both a DS version (Red Rescue Team) and a GBA version (Red Rescue Team).

Capcom Classics Minimix

This GBA cart has three NES classics in portable form - Bionic Commando, Strider, and Mighty Final Fight. It’s a bit lean compared to Capcom’s PSP arcade game collections (which have nearly twenty games on them), but it’s only $20, and Bionic Commando is one of the best video games ever made, so it’s not that bad a deal.

Okami

Although hundreds of thousands of Nintendo fans are awaiting the new (yet still the same old) Zelda, when they should be paying attention to Capcom’s Okami. It has the same adventure puzzle solving action, except with gorgeous cell shaded graphics, a more interesting protagonist (an awesome wolf god) and a vastly more unique world.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime

The goofy little slime of Dragon Warrior/Quest fame stars in his own little action/adventure. There are also plenty of weird little battle segments where you load rocks and stuff, and shoot them out of cannons (hence the name, I guess.) Even if you found Dragon Quest 8 impossibly boring like I did, this one’s a bit more involving, even though it’s a bit simplistic.

The King of Fighters 2006

Technically this is King of Fighter Maximum Impact 2, the sequel the SNK’s 2004 vastly underrated 3D fighter. This installment takes everything of the original, and refines it by adding nicer character models, super cancels, tons and tons of new characters, and a whole lot of fan service for Neo Geo fans. Although it seems to be missing the bonus anime disc from the Japanese release, it’s only $30, so it’s an okay tradeoff.
