Almost
two years after its release, I still play this game. The
destructible environments, massive monsters, camp factor, and absolutely
rumbling base have kept me playing. It may not be as deep as
Virtua Fighter 4 or as slick as Soul Calibur II but that doesn't make it
less fun.
The
next Larry game -- Magna Cum Laude -- is due out very soon and what
better primer for it than the games that created the legend? In one
convenient package for $40US you can snag all the Larry games up to
Larry 7 (the last one produced just before Sierra underwent some massive
changes). Not only does hilarity permeate every ribald line of
code, the Pleasure Pack is a great way to see how adventure games
evolved from parser to icon, and from rough graphics and sound to SVGA
splendor and awesome audio. It's definitely worth the asking
price.
When
I first heard about Billy and his "magical rooster suit" I
knew this title would appear on my list of favorites. A somewhat
quirky project from the same team that brought the world Sonic the
Hedgehog, you take on the task of rolling (and hatching) giant eggs on a
quest to rid the world of some really evil crows. It has a cutesy
veneer (and a annoyingly catchy theme song) but the game is actually
pretty deep, with a solid multiplayer component.
With
the impending release of Half-Life 2, it's time to go back and take a look
at the original. The Game of Year Edition includes the original
game and Team Fortress Classic. After that you can go to work
downloading all the available mods (and there are many!) like
Counter-Strike and They Hunger. If you haven't played the best
shooter ever (and some say, best game ever), the price is definitely
right!
