Games on the Cheap 3

(October 10, 2004 by Lee Cieniawa)

ESPN NFL 2K5 (Xbox)

Genre: Football
Hours of Play: Unlimited!

Full Armchair Empire Review

This isn't last year's ESPN at a reduced rate. No, it's brand spanking new
for the 2004 season and ESPN NFL 2K5's got it all: not only is it the best
football game available (yes, better than Madden), it has Xbox Live online
play, including leagues. This is football gaming at its finest. And it's
only $20 bucks. Sega knew it needed a great plan to catch Madden this year.
It's solution? Offer gamers a great game at an unbelievably great price.
Brilliant!

Soul Calibur II (Xbox)

Genre: Fighting
Hours of Play: Unlimited!

Full Armchair Empire Review

Before Soul Calibur II came out, the first Soul Calibur was regarded as one
of the best fighters of all-time. Fans of the franchise anxiously awaited
Soul Calibur II. They weren't disappointed when this awesome weapon-laden
fighter came out. It's a multi-platform release, and each had a
platform-exclusive character, but if you have more than one system, pick up
the Xbox version, because Spawn's the coolest exclusive character among them
all.

Viewtiful Joe (GameCube)

Genre: Action
Hours of Play: 10-20

Full Armchair Empire Review

This is one of the most original games to come along in a while. Part
old-school brawler, Viewtiful Joe is an amazing and definitely unique gaming
experience. The GameCube has an eclectic library from Pikmin to Donkey
Konga, and Viewtiful Joe is no exception. Plenty of action and a wonderfully
artistic approach to game design: Viewtiful Joe proves to be more than
average.

The Simpsons Hit & Run (Xbox)

Genre: Action
Hours of Play: 20-25

Full Armchair Empire Review

Finally, Simpsons fans were rewarded with a great Simpsons-licensed game.
This is by far the best Simpsons game ever, although it completely rips off
the whole Grand Theft Auto III gameplay (Somehow, someway, you just know Mr.
Burns was behind that). This is an addictive game that lets you roam the
streets of Springfield in vehicles with a hearty selection of show
characters. The Simpsons Hit & Run definitely gives new meaning to cartoon
violence. Once you pick up the controller, it's hard to put it back down.
