Games on the Cheap IV

(October 17, 2004)

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven (PS2)

Genre: Stealth Action

Hours of Play: 25-30

Full Armchair Empire Review

Ninjas can make for a damn good time with their black silk clothes, swords, and shuriken.  The folks behind the Tenchu series are well aware of this too.  In this PS2 installment, games get to enjoy a stealthy action game where one's sense are more important than ever.  No fancy high-tech gadgets here, you only get a good set of eyes and ears to make it passed guards in this game.  Best of all, if you finish the game once, there's plenty of replay value to enjoy too.

F-Zero GX (Gamecube)

Genre: Racing

Hours of Play: Unlimited!

Full Armchair Empire Review

One of the most important aspects of a well made racing game is its ability to present a good sense of speed.  This is what F-Zero GX does extremely well.  Combined with very well-designed tracks, solid controls, and very pretty graphics, this racer is a must for any Gamecube owner.

Homeworld 2 (PC)

Genre: Strategy (RTS)

Hours of Play: 50+

Full Armchair Empire Review

When it comes to real-time strategy games set in deep space, no one does it better than Relic.  Homeworld 2 greatly improves on the original with smarter enemies, even more impressive visuals, and more missions that you can shake a stick at.  Best of all, the game is quite intuitive, so players don't have to spend most of their time scratching their head wondering what to do.

Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution (PS2)

Genre: Fighting

Hours of Play: Unlimited!

As the first truly embraced 3D fighting game franchise, Virtua Fighter has always held a special place in the minds of fighting fans.  In many ways Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution is a nod to long time followers of the series.  It's very easy to control, the AI is decent, the graphics are nice, and also of note, the original Virtua Fighter is even included as a thank you.  If you're looking for an inexpensive 3D fighter, this is a title to seriously consider.
