Richard "Levelord"
Gray told the Armchair Empire that SiN needed "just two more weeks to quality check
it." Alas, that never happened and SiN shipped with an
unhealthy dollop of bugs. However, with news of a sequel in the
works, it's time to revisit the original, which featured some solid
first-person shooter gameplay and actually managed to be fun if you
could stand the bugs and the long, long load times. SiN also got
an expansion pack, Wages of SiN that is worth checking out, and an
animated feature available on DVD.
I
can still remember the anticipation of getting my hands on a copy of
Sonic the Hegdehog. The hype surrounding it -- the SPEED! -- had
me almost shaking. And it proved to be worth the wait.
Although the original has been re-released on various compilation discs,
the original Genesis version remains the unmatched king.
Lathered with color and full of speed and creative level design, Sonic
the Hedgehog, spawned a mess of sequels and remains a high-water mark
for platforming during the 16-bit era.
Released
about 13 years ago -- time zooms by! -- Super Star Wars may have taken
some liberties with the source material, but it's still a solid
platformer. At the time, it seemed like the sound and graphics
were the pinnacle of greatness. Side-by-side with today's games
like Revenge of the Sith or Jedi Starfighter, it's clear just how much
technology has helped the overall gaming experience. Now that the
Star Wars Saga is finished, games based on the license should trickle
off somewhat and its even less likely we'll see games based on the
original trilogy so anyone looking for an old school Star Wars
experience, this is it.
Sega
Soccer Slam is one of the few "old" games that I play on a
consistent basis. It kick's "realistic" soccer games in
the shins and unashamedly goes for over-the-top cartoon sensibility with
magic passes and some of the most entertaining 3-on-3 sports action
anywhere. Unfortunately, the industry doesn't get behind
"cartoon" sports games the same way they push realism.
(The disappearance of the Hitz series really bugs me and whatever
happened to the Mutant League franchise?) If you like your sports
action fun rather than trying to cope with a "simulation" you
can't go wrong with Sega Soccer Slam.
