Sony
Unveals High-Capacity MD
(January
9, 2004)
Sony
has announced that they will be releasing new, high-capacity Mini-Discs
capable of storing 45 hours (over 1 gigabyte of storage capacity) of music. Planned for an April release
in the US, with European and Japanese releases to follow in June, the
company hopes to renew interest in the medium.
Those
following the development of Sony's PSP are probably already reasonably
familiar with these new MDs. However, what is new is that price
points have been announced by the company with the MD Players/Recorders
capable of playing the new high-capacity medium costing approximately
45,000yen and the discs clocking in at about 700yen each. It's
highly unlikely that games will retail for 700yen, though one has to wonder how
much of a crystal ball the 45,000yen MD Player will act as in predicting
a price point for the PSP (or how much of a loss the system will be sold
at initially) considering that the PSP is a much more sophisticated
piece of technology.
