Gameindustry.biz
is reporting today that Sony is giving very serious thought to adopting
a digital distribution model for games on the PlayStation 3. What
this would mean is that instead of going to a brick and mortar
establishment to buy games, people would simply download them
instead. This may even go so far as to be a feature included in a remodeled
PlayStation 2.
The extent to
which this will be done is not yet known, though. Whether it will
be like what Nintendo plans for the Revolution (re-releasing classic
games for download), or Xbox 360 (downloading demos, and playing in Live
Arcade), or being a means of downloading, or at least streaming,
complete games, hasn't been determined yet.
Of course,
before any of this happens, and at this point it's all just talk, Sony
will also have to get their act together in terms of making viable HDDs
available for their consoles. They tried once already with the
PS2, and other that Final Fantasy XI, not much got released for the
thing, relegating it to being a glorified memory card.
