Retiring Set: The Lighthouse Siege (70594)

The Ninjago line of Lego sets has been a pretty great story to watch unfold.  The series was originally planned to end just a couple of years after it began, but the popularity allowed it to stick around.  It has spawned a popular television series which is now going on seven seasons, and is next in line to receive the Lego Movie treatment.  This particular set includes a really awesome tower with a load of interactive play features, a great looking jet, seven mini-figurines, and a slew of weapons.  The Ninjago sets have always been designed around playability and this set is no exception, there are too many features to list, but rest assured they are there in bunches and a lot of fun.  Or, you know, just check out the official Lego description below. At the time of this writing, The Lighthouse Siege is still available on both Amazon and Lego Shop for MSRP or less.  It has been officially announced by Lego as retiring soon, so we don’t expect supplies to last long. The Ninjago set line has always been a ton of fun, and this set is no exception. As a collector, often the value is tied into aesthetics rather than play, but Ninjago is an exception.  With the movie coming out later this year there will be a ton of new sets released, but also increased demand for older sets like this one.  Since this is truly a really fun set, this one seems like a great set to pick up while you still can.

Retiring Set: TIE Fighter (75095)

One of the iconic vessels from the Star Wars franchise, the TIE Fighter was bound to be a popular Lego set from the moment the licensing deal was announced.

This version is a part of the Ultimate Collector Series which puts emphasis on details and size.  The TIE Fighter checks both boxes there, with its huge wings that look fantastic in a display setup.  We recently named this one of the best Star Wars sets for 2017

The set has been around since May 2015, to the roughly two-year run is pretty typical.  As of the time of this writing, the set is still available on both Amazon and the Lego Shop for MSRP.  The Lego Shop has this one flagged as being Hard to Find, indicating that now is a good time to pick this one up.

While the set is still available on a limited basis, it is tough to gauge the potential resale market for this one down the line.  The set does have a few major points going for it, however.

Being Star Wars, the set will remain more desirable than some others a there aren’t many fanbases as rabid as Star Wars fans.  Second, being an Ultimate Collector Series means this is the biggest, most detailed TIE Fighter set Lego has released.

A big, detailed, collector’s edition of one of the most collected and desired IPs in the world?  Seems like a pretty strong bet to see a value increase after retirement.

Retiring Set: The Scuttler (70908)

The Lego Batman movie spawned a lot of really good sets, not to mention the really fun movie.  The Scuttler is a smallish, insect-inspired vehicle which features some really cool extending legs and a net launcher.  We recently named this one of the best Super Hero sets for 2017.

As of the time of writing this post, the Scuttler was still available in the Lego Shop and below MSRP on Amazon.  Lego has this one marked as “Retiring Soon” which will usually fuel sales as fans and collectors alike grab the set while they can.

The Lego Batman Movie is a specific niche within the larger Batman/DC/Super Hero niche.  It is difficult to tell how much of a demand there will be for this down the line as there aren’t any history with this specific line to look to.  The thing we do know is that Batman is one of the most beloved superheroes in pop culture.  The movie was well received by both critics and fans so there is clearly some potential for a bit of a cult following.

Retiring Set: City Square (60097)

Lego City Square is a fantastic set to build your city around. It contains a handful of separate buildings and vehicles, all of which look great with some excellent visual appeal. The tram and the car showroom are personal favorites here, but everything included will fit right in with your Lego City.  These include Lego Shop, coffee shop, helicopter, scooter, tow truck, tram stop, Lego delivery truck, hot dog stand, and newsstand.  Phew, that’s a lot of content.  This set works as a fun collection of minor additions to an existing Lego city, or as a great base to begin a city.

City Square Square is currently available on both Amazon and the Lego Shop as of the time of this writing and below MSRP.  We don’t expect this to last very long, however, as once word spreads of a retiring Lego set, especially a high-quality one like this, they tend to sell quickly.

City is one of the oldest lines in Lego’s history.  The sets are constantly being rotated to make room for new ones.  City Square has had over a two-year run after making its initial appearance in May 2015.  While there are constantly new City sets coming out, it is sad to see such a great, wide spanning set like this sent to retirement.  City veterans and those looking to start a new City built on their own would be wise to grab this one before it is gone.

More details on the set from Lego.com:

It’s buzzing with activity at the City Square! Park your bike at the cozy coffee bar, hop aboard the awesome news helicopter and take to the skies for a bird’s-eye view. When you’re done flying, call the LEGO® Store where a new delivery has just arrived. Help the driver unload the boxes, place them on the handcart and wheel them into the store. Then check out the cool cars for sale at the dealership showrooms. Help the mechanic operate the car lift and fit a new set of sporty alloy rims. There’s just time to buy a hotdog and a newspaper for the journey home, but watch out for the pizza deliveryman on his speedy scooter as you head for the tram stop! Load your bike into the bike compartment, take a seat and watch the world go by as you travel through the LEGO City streets. What an exciting day! Includes 12 minifigures with assorted accessories: a tram driver, helicopter pilot, coffee shop saleswoman, pizza deliveryman, car saleswoman, mechanic, tow truck driver, hotdog salesman, LEGO sales person, LEGO delivery driver, a girl and a boy. The biggest upset in recent eSport raises a question on the format of tournaments.

Many fans watched in silence as SG Gaming, a relatively unknown Brazilian stack, knocked Team Secret off the 3000000$ price pool Kiev Major. Long will this match linger in our memories as one of the greatest upsets in the history of eSports.

This event sparked a fierce discussion in the eSport community regarding the single-elimination format of the tournament. No wonder, seeing that next round showed that while SG Gaming is a good team that can put up a fight, they are simply one level below other teams. Given a chance to climb the lower bracket, Secret would have had a good shot at changing the outcome of the entire tournament.

Supporters of the double-elimination format bring up a strong argument that if a tournament is to crown the current champions among all teams, independently of things between particular ones. Almost every team has their favorite scrimmage partners who know them like the backs of their hands. Skills showed in matches between such teams are not the accurate reflection of their power level because understanding your opponents style is important in all eSports. In such situations (ex. unlucky seeding), a better team, who would have stomped the tournament otherwise, might end up knocked out by their scrim partners.
It is also relevant in games where “cheese” tactics exist. A team or player may use a surprising strategy to win one match but still lose in the long run. Tournaments should reward masters, not one-trick ponies.
Not everyone agrees with that stance.
Some people say that tournaments should encourage these high-risk high-rewards plays as they are what allows us to see mesmerizing underdog stories. They point out that it is leagues’ and general rankings’ role to show the most consistent teams and tournaments are all about the feeling of the moment and glorious victories. In their opinion, a champion should withstand all obstacles and cheeses. Should a team overlook an issue, they shall pay the price. Like in war, there are no second chances. That’s a pretty good point when you consider the fact that it was Secret’s pride and cockiness that cost them a shot for 1000000$.

Apart from that, there’s an issue of time & money – tournaments played with double-elimination format take essentially double the time of single-elimination ones.
It may seem pretty good for the viewers for they wouldn’t just watch more games but also sometimes get a second chance to root for their beloved team as they would struggle to fight through the lower bracket, however, it is disastrous for organizers. It’s already common to see games dragging out for hours. Doubling that would mean either additional costs (and these events are already quite costly) or cutting down the number of teams. The latter means that while some may be happy to see their team for the second time, others may not get to see theirs at all (and that means fewer viewers, fewer tickets sold and smaller tournaments).

There is no straightforward answer to the question about the formats. The only thing we can be sure is that now Team Secret will think twice before underestimating their opponents.

What do you think about it? Should there be a standard format or should it be up to individual tournaments? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!
